Noted Author to Visit Folsom Lake College

The community is invited to a discussion with author Dympna Ugwu-Oju entitled “A Woman in Tribal Africa, a Black in White America” on Wednesday, February 24, at 7 p.m. at Folsom Lake College, 10 College Parkway in Folsom.

The event will take place in the college’s Community Room (Aspen Hall room FL1-20) and is sponsored by Folsom Lake College’s Multicultural Sub-Committee as part of African American History Month.

Dympna Ugwu-Oju was born in Nsukka, Nigeria. She has been published extensively in national newspapers and magazines, including Newsweek and the New York Times. Her first book, What Will My Mother Say (A Tribal African Girl Comes of Age in America), describes her childhood in the traditional Ibo culture of Nigeria where a woman's value is determined by factors she does not control and chronicles her war-torn childhood.

Her second book, In the Eyes of God (A Biafran story) is awaiting publication. Dympna holds her Bachelor’s Degree (English, minor in Magazine Journalism) from Briarcliff College, a Master's of Science (Print Journalism) from Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications, and a Doctorate Degree (Educational Leadership) from California State University, Fresno, and University of California, Davis. She is currently an instructor of Journalism at Fresno City College and previously taught at Middlesex County College in New Jersey and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Admission to the event is free (a daily parking pass can be purchased for $1).

Curl Your Hair. Take a Picture. Don't Kiss Me.

What do these words have in common?

They are all names of particular moves in Persian Dance.

Persian Dance is very different from belly dancing! As our instructor says (at The Studio), in Belly Dance you shake your boobs, in Persian Dance your boobs stay still and you shake your shoulders.

Well, it took me at least three classes before I figured out you really can JUST shake your shoulders!! I have to say, though, that I love love love Persian Dance. It has to be one of the best forms of exercise out there. The moves are slow, rhythmic, and even though you don’t work up a major sweat, every muscle in your body gets a workout.

First of all, I’m not used to standing on my tiptoes so my calves were really sore after my first class! Our instructor has been dancing for 30 years and came here from Iran after the Revolution many years ago. She is an incredible dancer and a very patient teacher. Thank goodness for that.

My body, just like in the ACKC classes I take and in Zumba, takes a LOT of time to learn a new step. I have learned to shake my shoulders just right and to move my hips almost like it should be done. Problem is, I can’t do both at the same time! Never having been one who can pat my head and rub my tummy at the same time, patience has to be in plentiful supply. And practice practice practice.

Not sure my co-workers at Style Media Group quite understand why I walk down the hallway either punching the air, cha-cha-ing, or shaking my behind on the way to the kitchen to get yet another cookie. Why do you think I do all of this?

Don't Forget about the Placer Hills Wine Tour...Continuing Today!

Passions soar during the Placer Hills Wine Tour this Valentine’s Day. Nine Sierra Foothills wineries, conveniently located off Interstate 80 between Sacramento and majestic Lake Tahoe, are open this weekend to greet wine enthusiasts with award winning wines, new releases and a tantalizing “sweets and treats” food and wine pairing theme with free or low cost tastings from noon to 5p.m. No appointments necessary on this special weekend!

Tour highlights also include port chocolate sauce and barrel tastings at Fawnridge; not-to-be-missed famous buffalo chili by Drooling Dog BarBQ and three new releases at Lone Buffalo; chocolate and port pairings at Mt. Vernon; sweets at Pescatore; and opportunities for deep discounts at Secret Ravine. For something especially decadent, sweethearts can plan ahead and make reservations for a special lasagna luncheon at Dono dal Cielo on Saturday or Sunday.

“The Placer Hills Wine Tour offers extraordinary wines in a down to earth, friendly tasting environment. Anyone looking to impress their sweetheart or enjoy an extra special long Valentine’s Day weekend will not be disappointed,” said Greg Van Dusen, CEO of Placer Valley Tourism.

Placer County’s rich wine growing history includes a past often overlooked by oenophiles. In the days before Prohibition, the region boasted more vineyards and wineries than Napa and Sonoma combined. Today the nine wineries participating in the wine tour offer an unparalleled experience to aficionados and novices, alike. Visitors will enjoy a warm welcome and a wide array of varietals to sample.

Lodging specials and Valentine’s dining deals also abound during the Placer Hills Wine Tour. For more details and links to the wineries, visit their Web site.
