Lilliput Holds 2nd Annual Derby Day: Hats On For the Kids

Lilliput Children’s Services, a local leader in foster, adoption and kinship care for the Sacramento region, will hold the second annual “Derby Day:  Hats On For the Kids” this weekend. The fundraiser will take place on Saturday, May 5 from 1 – 5 p.m. at Mulvaney’s B&L located at 1215 19th Street in Sacramento.

The agency’s mission is to ensure a child’s opportunity for permanence in a safe and nurturing family. Lilliput has a reputation throughout Northern California as an agency with high standards and best practices. All of their programs focus on ensuring that foster children find permanency in a timely manner; minimizing foster care drift and time in care.

Lilliput currently completes the most adoptions for foster children of any private agency in the state and has already placed more than 5,500 foster children with permanent families. Last year in Sacramento County alone Lilliput served over 600 children.  Today there are nearly 4,000 foster children in the Sacramento region and hundreds of those children are waiting for a permanent family.

Unfortunately many Sacramento youth will “age out” of foster care, turning 18 years old before they are adopted. The future is bleak for these emancipated teens with no family to support them. In fact, less than half of former foster youth will graduate from high school, some 50 percent will become homeless in the first 18 months and 20 percent will be incarcerated before they are 20 years old.

The Derby Day event will bring attention to foster, adoption and kinship services, while helping to bridge budget gaps through community fundraising. A $45 donation provides entrance to the event, two drinks and free valet parking.  There will be big screen TVs for live Derby viewing, authentic Southern-style food prepared by Mulvaney’s and awesome raffle prizes.

All raffle ticket sales proceeds will be used to develop the Training and Conference Center at their new headquarters. Lilliput relocated to 8391 Auburn Blvd in Citrus Heights in January. The larger facility will allow them to serve more families and children. Lilliput hosts multiple events every month here, providing professional trainings on a variety of best child welfare practices, preparing families for the placement of a foster child into their home, supporting families after adoption and more.

Sleep Train, Inc. will be recognized as Lilliput’s Community Partner of the Year. A Foster Kids Partner since July 2011, Lilliput is so thankful for the generous contributions that are regularly given to the foster children they serve.

For more information, please visit Lilliput.org/DerbyDay2012.aspx or call Lilliput’s Community Relations Coordinator at (916) 567-4472.
