Watoto Children's Choir Of Ugandan Orphans

The Watoto Children’s Choir traveling from Africa kicked-off their six month U.S tour in Queen Creek, Arizona on Saturday December 14, 2013 and are continuing their tour through the west coast—ending in Washington on April 4, 2014.

Beautiful Africa: A New Generation, performed by the Watoto Children's Choir, is coming to the Sacramento area. All performances are free and open to the public.

The Watoto Children’s Choir acts as Watoto ambassadors to raise awareness about the plight of the orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa. Watoto is a holistic child-care solution initiated to serve the dire needs of Africa and her people.

Each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both parents. They live in Watoto Children’s Villages where they receive the care and nurture they need to grow up as productive citizens of their own country.

With vibrant, original African music; dance routines; life-transforming stories, the tours is indicative of the new generation of leaders emerging out of Watoto.

“Through the choir’s Concert of Hope, we share a message of transformation by telling the story of Africa’s rescued orphans and women. We hope to reach out to audiences with the message of Christ’s healing power,” says Gary Skinner, Watoto Founder.

With its genuine appeal, accompanied by music and dance – an energetic fusion of contemporary gospel and traditional African rhythm – the globally acclaimed Watoto Children’s Choirs has traveled internationally since 1994 as ambassadors for the millions of children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war and poverty.

Since its inception, 64 choirs have traveled globally, providing the children with a bigger worldview, an unusual opportunity they would otherwise never get. The choirs have been to Australia, Brazil, China, Europe, Hong Kong, Japan, Germany, France and the U.S, among others. Their audiences have included royalty, presidents, ministers and the ordinary person, capturing many hearts wherever they go.

Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra Presents A Tribute To Ella Fitzgerald At Harris Center

"The best jazz repertory band in the country” (The New Yorker) honors The First Lady of Song—Ella Fitzgerald—by seizing a special moment in American history.

Pulling original, little played arrangements done for Ella in the ‘40s and ‘50s—charts penned by superstar arrangers such as Billy May, Count Basie, Billy Strayhorn and Benny Carter— Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the ever-elegant Kim Nazarian will join together in an evening at Harris Center for the Arts of “fascinating rarities...each played with as much skill as authenticity” (Chicago Tribune).

Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums. Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz and imitate every instrument in an orchestra. She performed at top venues all over the world, and packed them to the hilt.

Called "Culturally important...spectacular musically... Precise, intelligent and straightforward" by the New York Times, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) was founded in 1990 with an appropriation from the U.S. Congress in recognition of the importance of jazz in American cultural and its status as a national treasure. The orchestra, led by Artistic and Musical Director, David N. Baker, serves as the orchestra-in-residence at the National Museum of American History, Division of Cultural History.
The orchestra re-creates big band jazz as its composers and arrangers intended it to be played, stripping away intervening changes and alterations.

“Bless you, child. Keep singing.” Such was the encouragement jazz vocalist Kim Nazarian received during a brief but unforgettable encounter with her idol, Ella Fitzgerald. A native “up-state” New Yorker and Magna Cum Laude graduate of Ithaca College, Kim is a founding member of the Grammy award-winning group New York Voices, formed in 1987. She has recorded numerous CD’s and toured the world with this outstanding vocal quartet. For their most recent project, the group took on the role of featured artist with Paquito D’Rivera on his latest release for the MCG Jazz label; Brazilian Dreams. Ms. Nazarian is also a featured artist on a number of other CD’s released on the MCG Jazz label, including Afternoon In Rio with Joe Negri, The 21st Century Swing Band, and the highly acclaimed A Nancy Wilson Christmas.

Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra: A TRIBUTE TO ELLA FITZGERALD will be performed on Sunday, February 26, 2014 at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $25-$39; Premium $45; Students with ID $12. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net  or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 am to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, facing East Bidwell Street.

Folsom Symphony Conductor Michael Neumann Will Retire In March

The Folsom Symphony's popular conductor, Michael Neumann, will retire as music director after the orchestra's March performance, President Bruce Woodbury has announced. Neumann will continue with the symphony as music director emeritus.

Peter Jaffe, conductor for the Stockton and Auburn symphonies, will replace Neumann beginning with the 2014-2015 season.

Jaffe also will guest conduct this season's final program, Out of This World, a pops concert with two performances, May 31 and June 1.

"It is hard to express the value Michael has brought to the Folsom Symphony," Woodbury said. "From the beginning, he has enabled us to bring such great music to this community. We owe him a debt of gratitude for his service and leadership in our organization."

Neumann has been the symphony's only conductor since the inaugural performance in 2004. In the symphony's 10 seasons, he has led all but one performance. Audiences love his pleasant humor and musical commentary.

Neumann was already well known as the music director for the Sacramento Youth Symphony – a position he will keep – and Woodbury credits his stature in the region as a major reason the orchestra has attracted top-quality musicians. Under Neumann's leadership, the symphony has won high praise and awards and nearly always plays to full houses at the Harris Center/Three Stages theater.

Neumann's final performance with Folsom will be In Celebration of Spring on March 29. A Beethoven devotee – and sometimes compared to the composer in appearance and style – Neumann is ending his career with the orchestra as he opened it: conducting a Beethoven piece, in this case Symphony No. 7.

Jaffe, who has conducted with Stockton since 1995 and Auburn since 2012, comes to Folsom with a broad background in a variety of musical arenas. He has directed classical and pops concerts and led orchestras for opera and theater, performed as a violinist, violist and pianist, and arranged many classical and original works. He studied under Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood, in Massachusetts, one of the world's most esteemed music venues. He also served 14 years as resident conductor for the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado.

Jaffe has received top awards from the Association of California Symphony Orchestras and the Stockton Arts Commission and has been honored by the University of the Pacific and San Joaquin Delta College for innovations in education and by the Brubeck Institute for distinguished service.

Jaffe holds two bachelor's degrees, in music from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and in mathematics from Oberlin College, and master's and doctorate degrees in conducting from Stanford University.

"We are extremely pleased to be welcoming such a high-caliber conductor as Peter Jaffe," Woodbury said. "He will continue our great tradition of bringing beautiful music to the Folsom Lake region."

The Folsom Symphony's next performance under Neumann is Romance!, February 8, 7:30 p.m., at the Harris Center/Three Stages theater on the Folsom Lake College campus, 10 Scholar Way, in Folsom.
