Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center Presents A Live Radio Show: Miracle on 34th Street

The Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center is proud to present A Live Radio Show: Miracle on 34th Street at the State Theatre for three performances: Friday, December 7th and Saturday, December 8th at 7:30p.m., and Sunday, Dec 9th at 3:00p.m.

A Live Radio Show: Miracle on 34th Street is directed by Glenda Gonzalez and features familiar local actors as well as first time State performers from the area.  APPAC’s lighting and sound guru, Tony Broadbent, will be creating the atmosphere for this holiday season family favorite.

The live radio show features Melanie Flint as Doris (Maureen O’Hara in the original 1947 film version). Rick Schlussell as Fred (John Payne), Susan (as was common during heyday of live radio shows for a child’s role to be performed by adult, in this version we are presenting local actress Pam Harrold). The beloved Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn in the film version) is performed by local actor Dwayne Causie.

A Live Radio Show:  Miracle on 34th Street is the story of what takes place in New York City following Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, as people are left wondering whether or not a department store Santa might be the real thing. Six year old Susan (Natalie Wood in the film version) discovers dreams do come true if you really believe. Susan has doubts about childhood's most enduring miracle - Santa Claus. Her mother told her the "secret" about Santa a long time ago, so Susan doesn't expect to receive the most important gifts on her Christmas list. After meeting a special department store Santa who's convinced he's the real thing, Susan is given the most precious gift of all - something to believe in.

Tickets are adults $15, students $10, and children 12 & under $5. Tickets will be available at the door, with a limited number of seats available for advance purchase online at livefromauburn.com, or call the box office at 530-885-0156. The box office opens 90 minutes before show time for each performance.

Featured Artist Reception at Art on the Divide Cooperative Gallery Sunday

Art on the Divide Cooperative Gallery continues its monthly featured artist series with the work of Kristi Kolln. Kristi’s art will be featured in the gallery through the month of November, and the public is invited to come meet the artist at a reception on Sunday, November 11, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Kristi is a product of her grandfathers. One was a teacher and small business person, the other was an artist and accountant. She is all these things. She taught elementary art in the East, accounting at De Anza Community College in Cupertino, and she currently has a tax accounting practice. Kristi has been a full time Divide resident since 1998. For 5 years she had two programs on local radio station KFOK- one called Mozart and More, the other called Fabulous Femmes.

An accomplished artist, Kristi produces works in ceramic, glass and more. She has explored several media trying to walk the edge between function and sculpture. She considers function to be an added dimension in art; while it is nice to have beautiful things around you, it is more exciting to touch and use beautiful things.

Art on the Divide hopes you will visit the gallery to see Kristi’s work and that of our their talented local artists. They are located in one of Georgetown’s historical buildings at 6295 Main Street, halfway between the fire station and the American River Inn. Winter hours are Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call 530.333.2787, or see their website at artonthedivide.com.

DECORATED “CIGAR MARINE” AND BESTSELLING AUTHOR LAUNCHES LINE OF CIGARS

Author and speaker Nick “Gunny Pop” Popaditch—the “Cigar Marine”—is launching a line of cigars with a portion of the proceeds going to support the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund to honor his fellow military men and women.

In recognition of the Marine Corps Birthday, Nick will unveil his new cigar line at a special event held Nov. 10, at 6:00 p.m., at Art of Cigars (2222 Francisco Dr., Suite 470) in El Dorado Hills. The first two premium hand-rolled cigars to be released under the “Cigar Marine” line are “The Gunny” (a double-wrapped Torpedo) and “The Tanker” (a mild spiced Rum). The cigars will be designed and distributed by Art of Cigars, in cooperation with Popaditch’s publisher, Savas Beatie LLC.

“I am excited to stand behind a product that allows cigar smokers to celebrate in true Marine Corps style, and even more so to support a great organization that helps so many injured Marines and their families,” said Nick “Gunny Pop” Popaditch. Nick’s goal is to raise one million dollars for the Semper Fi Fund. The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit set up to provide immediate financial support for injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.

Popaditch, who was partially blinded in combat during the First Battle of Fallujah in 2004 when he was struck in the head by an RPG, has been a strong supporter of the Semper Fi Fund.

The event is open to the public. Visit thecigarmarine.eventbrite.com for registration and additional information. Nick will also participate as the Grand Marshal for the City of Sacramento Veteran’s Day Parade on November 11.

Struggling Families Turn to News10’s Coats for Kids to Keep Warm this Winter

For more than two decades, News10’s Coats for Kids has helped over a half million families stay warm during the cold winter season. With the current tough economic times, the need for donating coats is greater now than ever before.

You can help struggling families by simply cleaning out your closets.  New or gently used coats of all sizes are welcome. Though the program is called ‘Coats for Kids,’ many parents also go without the proper attire to stay warm.

Donations are accepted at all Swanson’s Cleaners, Tri Counties Bank locations, The UPS Stores and News10 studios from now through December 14. Many other local businesses and schools also participate; visit News10.net for specific locations and hours of operation.

The collection goal this year is 20,000. “It is amazing how everyone steps-up…year after year to help reach the goal,” says Mellisa Paul, News10 Community Liaison Director.  “It’s inspiring to see this type of generosity from our viewers, schools and local businesses. Not to mention our wonderful sponsors; Swanson’s Cleaners, Tri Counties Bank and the Salvation Army. Coats for Kids is on its 22nd year, because its roots run deep in the community.”

Roots planted by local businessman Roger Swanson, owner of Swanson’s Cleaners. In 1981, Swanson formed a partnership with News10 to outfit struggling families with a warm coat for the colder months. Swanson’s Cleaners sanitizes all the used coats collected in the drive before they are distributed to the public.

The Salvation Army also joined the mission collecting, sorting and distributing coats. They will be on site at seven locations, 9a.m. to 7p.m. on Friday, December 28 for ‘Distribution Day.’  Any struggling family is encouraged to come and select free of charge, the coats of their choice. All selections are on a first-come, first-served basis. Some form of ID is required for each family member receiving a coat. School IDs, medical cards, library cards, driver’s licenses and state IDs are all accepted. Identification is for accounting purposes only; information about recipients is not shared with any state or federal agency.

In Sacramento, distribution takes place at Cal Expo.  In Stockton, Modesto, Lodi, Roseville, Yuba City and Grass Valley, coats will be distributed at local Salvation Army locations. All Locations are open to the public. If you wish to make a financial contribution, please mail it to: The Salvation Army, PO Box 340699, Sacramento, CA, 95834. Make checks payable to: “Coats For Kids.”  Or make your financial contribution at any Tri Counties Bank location.  Your gift is tax deductible; all funds are used to purchase new coats for News10’s Coats for Kids.

News10’s Coats for kids is also generously supported by KIA of Sacramento, The UPS Stores, PODS storage containers, Cumulus Radio (KAT Country), Radio Disney and Cal Expo.

For more information visit News10.net, or call their News10’s Coats for Kids hotline at (916) 321-3362.
