Scholarships Available for the 2013 PlacerGROWN Farm Conference

Scholarships are now available to apply for attending the 2013 PlacerGROWN Farm Conference!

The theme of the 2013 PlacerGROWN Farm Conference is Survive and Thrive. This conference will be held Saturday, January 26th at Lincoln High School, from 8:00a.m. – 3:00p.m.

The conference is co-sponsored by UC Cooperative Extension and PlacerGROWN. The keynote part of the conference will feature a panel that will discuss trends over the next 5-10 years on the following topics: Land Use, Water, Regulations, Local Farms, Demographics, and Marketing of Local Food. Participants will be provided an opportunity to respond to each panel member’s presentation. There will be discussion on implications and potential responses with the audience.

After the keynote will be two workshops sessions, one before and one after lunch. Workshops will
run for one hour and 15 minutes. Workshops have a theme of selling strategies, consumer education,
and improving profitability. Workshops include:
-Consumer Outreach to Enhance awareness and Marketing of Specialty Crops in the Placer and
Nevada  Counties
-Display Ideas and Interactions with Customers That Can Improve Your Sales
-Things to Consider in Becoming Effective at Direct Marketing
-Understanding Selling Wholesale and its Potential in Expanding Your Sales
-How to Project Profit and Cash Flow Before the Beginning of Your Production Year
-Production Planning Based on Economic and Cash Flow Projections
-Developing Your Niche Meat Business
-Learning How Social Media Can Improve Sales
-Determining Your Niche Meat Marketing Costs

You can find the scholarship application form online at ucanr.edu/sites/PGFFC/. The application is due by January 18th.

The cost of the conference is $40 if you pre-register by January 18th, and $50 after that date. The registration fee includes: continental breakfast, proceedings, trade show, keynote panel, workshops and lunch. Join Liberace Presents at Sutter Street Theatre for a Fun Filled Time

The holidays are over and if you are not ready to stop the party, Sutter Street Theatre has the answer! Liberace Presents is a fun evening of entertainment featuring many of your favorite performers portraying some of their Liberace Presents favorite entertainers from a bygone era.

The flamboyant Liberace will be played by John Wilder (Evil Dead, Tom Foolery, Holiday in the Hills, Nunsense and the Marvelous Wonderettes). John has previously performed this role at the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas.

Others include Mike Jimena (Escanaba in da Moonlight, Odd Couple, Holiday in the Hills) who gets no respect as Rodney Dangerfield; Artistic Director Connie Mockenhaupt (Nunsense, Holiday in the Hills) as the charismatic Carol Burnett; MoniqueWard-Lonegan fresh off her role as the mouse in (If You Give A Mouse A Cookie) and a summer with Music Circus will portray America's little princess, Shirley Temple. Brady Tait, resident actor with Sutter Street Theatre, will entertain you as Dick Dale; Eileen Beaver will bring "fever" to the Sutter Street stage as Peggy Lee; and, Jessica Simpson will ask you to "dream a little dream of me" as "Mama" Cass Elliot. You are guaranteed to have a fun evening of entertainment at Liberace Presents.

Liberace Presents opens Saturday, January 5 at 7:00p.m. and continues on Sunday, January 6 at 1:00p.m. and 4:00p.m., Friday, January 11 at 7:00p.m., Saturday, January 12 at 1:00p.m. and 7:00p.m., and Sunday, January 13 at 1:00p.m. and 4:00p.m. You only two weekends to see this original show! Tickets are $23 general, $21 seniors, $18 students with an ID Card, $15 children 12 and under.

Blue Line Gallery Presents Natures Palette by Reif Erickson

Blue Line is very proud to present a one person show called Natures Palette by Reif Erickson. Reif Erickson is a nationally known artist with works in public, corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Japan.

REIF (pronounced ray-f) has been pursuing his art career for the last twenty years. Reif contributes much of that success to combining his continuing practice of painting in "plein air" with close observation, refinement of color relationships, and technical expertise with the pastel medium, to achieve masterful landscapes of California and the Southwest.

Reif has been recognized continually throughout his career for his talents, and has won awards in numerous competitions. Reif, was honored by the Pastel Society of the West Coast as a Distinguished Pastellist. He also is a full member of the long-standing and prestigious California Art Club.

A native of Eastern Washington, Reif returned to university studies at the age of 26 and graduated with honors from Gonzaga University in 1981. Shortly thereafter, the Russian born colorist Sergei Bongart influenced Reif to paint outdoors. Reif is recognized continually for his talents including: Award of Excellence (Best Quick Draw) La Quinta Desert Plein Air (2001); Best of Show, Yosemite Renaissance XVI traveling exhibition (2001); acceptance into the California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition-Pasedena (1995,2001,2002); as well as one of 50 paintings chosen for the International IAPS Pastel Biennial Exhibition (2001).

Reif was the 1991 honoree by the Pastel Society of the West Coast as a Distinguished Pastellist. He is a member of the prestigious California Art Club, a charter member of the Sierra Pastel Society, and past president of the Pastel Society of the West Coast.

Whole Foods Market® Now Accepting Applications for “Whole Foods Market’s Next Entrepreneur” Event

Whole Foods Market® is now accepting applications for the “Whole Foods Market’s Next Entrepreneur” event on February 6.

This is a great opportunity for local vendors to present products to the Whole Foods Market Purchasing Team. Vendors need to apply by January 14th.

WHAT:        
Whole Foods Market will be hosting the “Whole Foods Market’s Next Entrepreneur” event on February 6 at the Oakland Scottish Rite Center, from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.  This unique event will give local vendors an opportunity to present their new products to the Whole Foods Market purchasing team and select store representatives.

Additionally, the event will include education sessions to assist vendors with growing their businesses as well as provide key businesses resource contacts for packaging, loans, production and distribution, to name a few.  The event will also include information on the Whole Foods Market Local Loan Program and success stories from several vendors who have benefited from the loan program.

"As Whole Foods continues to open new stores in Northern California, we are also foraging for new local food entrepreneurs! We're looking for unique local products and entrepreneurs that want to grow with us," said Whole Foods Market's Local Forager Harvindar Singh.

WHO:          
Vendors with unique items who are interested in selling their products at Whole Foods Market in Northern California and Reno stores. To be considered as a potential participant, vendors must register by Monday, January 14.

Last Chance to Sign Up for Wonderful Winter Art Camp!

Blue Line Gallery Roseville Arts! is offering "Wonderful Winter Art Camp." Hurry, this is the last chance to sign up!

Day 1: Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013 (9a.m.-3p.m.)
On the first day of camp, children will paint their own "Wonderful Winter" scene. They will learn about famous painters who created winter scenes, and use that as inspiration for their own painting. They will also learn about painting techniques and how to build a painting.  

Day 2: Thursday, January 3rd, 2013 
(9a.m.-3p.m.)
For the second day of camp, children will create winter-inspired comics using a master artist Roy Lichtenstein as their inspiration.

Day 3: Friday, January 4th, 2013
(9a.m.-3p.m.)
On the final day of camp, everyone will get creative with candy to build and decorate their own gingerbread houses!

Full three days, half day and per day options now available!
