Hands on History: Trappers, Trades & Treaties At Sutter's Fort

As part of a special and continuing interactive program happening on the third Saturday of each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) will present a special Hands on History: Trappers, Trades, and Treaties event in January.

Visitors to the Fort will step back in time to the 1840s to learn why trappers were considered “jacks of many trades” and experience how they lived, worked, explored new territory and traded with local Native Americans.

Fort visitors will see, handle and hear about many items that were commonplace in the middle of the 19th century but seem strange now. Guests will also learn about many fascinating aspects in the life of a trapper, see examples of game traps and how they work, plus learn about the important “barter process” Sutter used to hunt and trap on Native lands.

Fort visitors will also have the opportunity to examine fur pelts, create souvenir documents with a quill pen and oak gall ink, string trade beads and watch how flint and steel can be used to start a fire.  As an event highlight, an original oil painting of Sutter’s Fort -- titled Welcome -- will be unveiled that was created by local historian and artist Mark Davidson.  In fact, hundreds of hours of research went into creating an accurate depiction of the Fort (and daily life) before the Gold Rush.

To provide insight, two special presentations will be offered that day by Davidson and Steve Beck, History and Education Programming Lead at Sutter’s Fort, about the painting, its nuances and the research that went into its creation.
  • What:  Hands on History:  Trappers, Trades and Treaties!
  • Where:  Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park, 2701 L Street, Sacramento
  • When:  Saturday, January 18, 2014
  • Time:  10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Special presentations:  11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m.
  • Cannon firing demonstrations:  11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m.
  • Musket demonstrations periodically throughout the day
  • Cost:  $7 per adult, $5 per youth (ages 6-17), free for children 5 years and under

El Dorado County’s Food Bank Goes Big For The Holidays!

For 14 years the Food Bank of El Dorado County has provided all the fixings for a Christmas dinner to our neighbors who struggle to make ends meet.

This year being no different, well over 1,000 families attended the giant outreach at the Food Bank’s new community outreach building in Cameron Park. Just 13 days after completion of the project, your local Food Bank has been successful in quickly setting up and doing what they do best: providing efficient and effective food assistance to our local at-risk population who need it most.

The Food Bank also partnered with the El Dorado Hills Vision Coalition, California Health and Wellness and a representative from the El Dorado County Human Services to provide educational support that this group could take advantage of. A resident leading the distribution was in tears, “A holiday meal, someone to help with translating the current health insurance changes and people who care-I am blessed to live in El Dorado County.”

Over 300 community volunteers assisted in organizing the event and helping distribute food to the community from businesses, social clubs, faith based organizations and more made this event successful as a result of the whole community coming together. The El Dorado County Sheriff Department’s STAR Volunteer program was key in delivering food to home bound residents who would otherwise go without due to their medical conditions.

Carey Fong, the Food Bank’s new Communications & Development Director said “This is the first time I have been involved with this Holiday Outreach at the Food Bank; it was amazing to see our community volunteers unite and help our most at-risk population right here in El Dorado County.”

Remember local hunger has no season. You can work with your Food Bank on a regular basis! Contact them today and get involved with El Dorado County’s largest collaborative charity.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County is one of the most efficient and effective charities in El Dorado County. Aside from its ability to provide a five to one return for our donor’s dollar, volunteers and community support are the main reasons for the Food Bank’s success.

Contributions can be mailed to the Food Bank of El Dorado County at 3291 B Coach Lane, Cameron Park, CA, 95682 or online at foodbankedc.org or by calling Carey Fong at 530-621-9950.

For more information on volunteering, please contact the Food Bank of El Dorado County at (530) 621-9950 or by email at volunteer@foodbankedc.org. You can also follow them on Facebook at facebook.com/foodbankedc.

Tis’ the Season To Keep Your Pets Safe

Many of the things that make the holidays special, including large gatherings, food and holiday decorations can be hazardous for our pets.

With a few simple precautions, the whole family can bask in good cheer.

Please keep the following in mind as you celebrate the holiday season:
1)     Poinsettias, mistletoe and holly can be poisonous to our pets if nibbled or eaten.  In addition, live and artificial Christmas trees can contain poisonous pesticides, lead or other harmful materials that could pose a danger to our pets.

2)     Keep decorations out of reach of playful pets. Ribbons and sparkling lights may be attractive to your pets but they can be very harmful and even fatal.

3)     Don’t over-indulge your pets with treats. Changing your pet’s diet abruptly can upset their stomach, causing diarrhea and/or vomiting. Additionally, foods that we commonly consume can be poisonous to your pet, such as tomato pulp, olives, mushrooms and chocolate.

4)     Busy holiday gatherings are a prime time for pets to slip out of the house. Make sure Fido finds his way back home by keeping up-to-date and legible identification on your pets at all times. The Placer SPCA strongly advises that all dogs and cats be microchipped, and offers microchip implants for $15 during monthly clinics or $20 during all business hours.

5)     Provide a safe and quiet place for your pets during the holiday gatherings.  Even the most social pets can become overwhelmed when there are lots of people and lots of excitement.

6)     ADOPT, DON’T SHOP – If you or someone you know will be adding a pet to their family, please adopt from your local animal shelter or a reputable rescue organization. There are many homeless animals looking for the best gift of all this season – a loving home.

If you have questions regarding animal care and behavior, please contact the Placer SPCA at (916) 782-7722 or (530) 885-7387 or visit placerspca.org.

January Exhibit At The Gallery At 48 Natoma

Abstract art dates back to the early 1900’s when artists began to paint abstract art as a result of a deliberate artistic and philosophical development.

Two acclaimed artists’ work in different media will be showcased in this time-honored style in the next exhibit at the Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom, Abstracts in Fiber and Paint.

Joe Strickland will exhibit his newest series of paintings in mixed-media, and Joan Dyer will show her unique fabric art. The exhibit opens on January 24 and continues through March 6, 2014.

Strickland has been recognized for his unique use of multiple mediums in his work; pushing a medium in order to uncover an inventive method of using it in unconventional means.

Joe Strickland’s paintings are water-based pigments mixed with oil resulting in incredible textures, values and hues. His unique technique combined with a background in serigraphy has inspired him to push the boundaries to invent new ways of expression in the fine art of printmaking.

Joan Dyer’s fabric art is created entirely by an intuitive process, with which she builds her designs fairly quickly and freely. All of her art quilts are her original designs, generally depicting abstract forms from nature.  Joan Dyer’s style has evolved utilizing curved piecing and organic shapes, generally with warm colors.  “I learned traditional methods of piecing by hand when I began this journey with fabric, but soon began to enjoy the design phase of fabric artistry.”

Dyer’s collection of fabrics includes mostly her own hand-dyed and hand-painted cottons and silks.  Fabrics with various surface designs, using discharge and resist techniques, are often included.  She collects a wide variety of unique pieces including African and Asian batiks, home decorator fabrics, and interesting pieces from around the world.

RockSTAR Music Education's Winter Showcase Wednesday & Thursday

RockSTAR Music Education takes over Halftime Bar & Grill as elementary school rock bands from around Placer County gather to live out their rock ‘n’ roll fantasies on Wednesday and Thursday, December 18th and 19th from 6:30-7:30p.m.  for RockSTAR’s 2nd Annual Winter Showcase.

RockSTAR Music Education, a subdivision of California-based non-profit enrichment and education organization STAR Education, has made it possible for these practiced young musicians to live the dream as they showcase what they’ve learned playing both the classics we love and even their own original songs.

Over 500 people are expected to show up to celebrate these pint-sized rockers’ musical talents, hard work and dedication. These 6-12 year olds are revved up and ready to rock; decked out in funky clothes, dyed hair, and fake tattoos. The venue will be packed throughout the evening as friends, fans, family and music education enthusiasts gather in support of Sacramento’s RockSTAR mini-musicians!

STAR Education, is a charitable 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization committed to helping students reach their full potential by offering affordable extended academic, recreational and enrichment programs; supporting and enhancing school curricula; inspiring student achievement; and expanding the cultural base of young people. For over 25 years, STAR has partnered with schools throughout California to involve students in our innovative, quality programs taught by exceptional, highly- trained instructors.

RockSTAR, a STAR Education program, was founded nine years ago with the fundamental mission of bringing music back into schools that had slashed their own music programs because of budget cuts. With celebrity support from such rock icons as The Black Keys, Slash, Santana, Britney Spears, Taylor Dayne, DMC, Chris Slade of AC/DC, Gene Simmons, Sammy Hagar and more, this is the most established and effective after school music program in California. By harnessing the cognitive, social and creative benefits of music education, RockSTAR allows children to learn, live large, let loose, hone musical skills, practice teamwork, and develop a sense of professionalism. Their programs are in over 100 elementary schools in California, Tennessee and New York. RockSTAR brings music education back into schools and into the lives of children through an exciting, innovative and relevant format.

For more information, please email rockstar@starsacramento.org or call (916) 632-8417.

About Preston Castle Foundation
The strikingly beautiful Romanesque style Preston Castle, on a hill in Ione, was actually the administration building for the Preston School of Industry, the first major attempt in California at rehabilitating, instead of just imprisoning, young offenders.  Opened in 1894, the Preston School of Industry became a leader in the juvenile prison reform movement by giving convicted boys a real chance at life by educating them not only in academics, but in all of the useful trades of the time.

Closed in 1960, when the Preston Youth Authority moved into a new administration building down the hill, the Preston Castle was left to deteriorate due to weather, vandalism and general neglect.  It now serves as a vacant, but vitally important landmark for Ione, Amador County and the Motherlode.  It is a California State Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Mission of the Preston Castle Foundation is to preserve, rehabilitate and utilize the historic Preston Castle site.  This year they are pushing hard to obtain their own utility connections that will ultimately lead to acquiring the title to the property.  To help raise money for this important project, the Foundation sponsors several fund raising events throughout the year.

Castle Tours are available on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, and selected Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., during the warmer weather months.  Check the website for specific dates.

Help save the Castle and learn more about their history, events and tours by visiting prestoncastle.com.  All contributions are tax deductible.

Women's Wisdom Art Holiday Open House And Art Sale December 14th

The artists of Women’s Wisdom Art,  low income women in our community, many of whom have health issues and are struggling to better their lives,  will be showing and selling their artworks at their 2nd annual Holiday Open House and Art sale on December 14, from 2-6 p.m. with a special poetry reading at 4 p.m.

Women's Wisdom Art (WWA) has been in existence since 1991. For nearly 22 years WWA has helped countless women experiencing hardship in their lives.

The empowering qualities of creating art are used to help women who are experiencing poverty and health issues ranging from cancer and stroke to various mental illnesses.

The umbrella group that had sponsored WWA for the past 12 years decided to refocus their resources and made a decision to close WWA.  This has left a huge void in the community for women recovering from everyday traumas. However, due to the efforts of original WWA founder, Laura Ann Walton, and some very dedicated volunteers lead by Helen Plenert they are continuing WWA as a free standing program.  They offer seven classes a week at Slider Community Center, 7851 35th Avenue, Sacramento.

Women’s Wisdom Art is actively seeking to add members to their Board and develop a community of financial support for the work of WWA.  For further information, please visit their website at womenswisdomart.org.

Primates More Comfortable at the Folsom Zoo Thanks to La-Z-Boy Owners

Two small primates named Darwin and Wallace will spend their days a little more comfortably thanks to Jim and Liz Reego, owners of the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries!

The Reegos, whose daughter Grace volunteered at the Zoo this past summer, recently donated $2,500 to the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary to provide a more safe and enriching living space for the adorable macaques.

"Grace came home after her shift at the Zoo and told us about Wallace who suffers from epilepsy and often falls suddenly," said Liz Reego, "We all decided that we wanted to help him have a more comfortable and safe life. Since we don't make recliners quite that small, we asked the Zoo what could be done." The upgrades will include demolishing old man-made rocks, adding sand for them to play in as well as installing more play and climbing structures for both macaques, who have been at the zoo for a long time, to enjoy.

"Years ago, I read about the incredible work of Jane Goodall and I fell in love with primates," said Grace Reego. “So I'm really happy that these little guys will have a better life thanks to our La-Z-Boy stores."

“Without the support and generosity of the public, volunteers, local businesses and private foundations we could never accomplish so much,” explained Jill Lute, Zoo Supervisor at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. “The animals will truly benefit from the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries donation.”

The Reegos have a long history of generously giving back to the community by proudly supporting a number of local charities, community groups and a variety of causes. For more information about locally owned La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries showrooms, please visit lazboy.com/sacramento.

Operation Gobble Program Donates Turkeys to the Food Bank of El Dorado County

Senator Ted Gaines (R-Rocklin), Assemblywoman Beth Gaines (R-Rocklin), Golden State Water Company and California American Water teamed up as part of the 23rd annual “Operation Gobble” program this Thanksgiving, providing 50 fresh turkeys to the Food Bank of El Dorado County!

This comes just in time as the Food Bank will feed more than 1,000 at-risk families this holiday season.  “I’m so proud to be associated with this annual event that fills such an important need within our community,” said Senator Gaines.

“Operation Gobble is an important community partnership that helps bring together a local business with some of the most supportive non-profits in my district,” said Assemblywoman Beth Gaines.

“California American Water and Golden State Water are proud to partner with the Gaines’ on this event,” said California American Water External Affairs Manager Evan Jacobs. “Operation Gobble is an opportunity for our local employees to give back to our customers, our neighbors and our families.”

This year, your local Food Bank is busy planning and working with the community to reach out to this struggling population.

“We are delighted to once again participate in Operation Gobble and are grateful for the continued support during the holidays,” said Food Bank Founder and Executive Director Mike Sproull.

Food Bank Communications and Development Director, Carey Fong, urges individuals and businesses in El Dorado County to contact her at the Food Bank to express how we can work together this holiday season.  “The Food Bank will provide over 1,000 holiday food baskets to our at-risk population on Friday, December 20th, and Saturday, December 21st, at our new building located at 4450 Business Drive in Cameron Park.  Together we can make a difference,” Fong says.

The Food Bank of El Dorado County is one of the most efficient and effective charities in El Dorado County.  Aside from its ability to provide a five to one return for our donor’s dollar, volunteers and community support are the main reasons for the Food Bank’s success.

Contributions can be mailed to the Food Bank of El Dorado County at 3291 B Coach Lane, Cameron Park, CA 95682 or online at foodbankedc.org or by calling Carey Fong at 530-621-9950.
