Paco Peña Will Appear For One Night Only At Three Stages

Beginning their current tour in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Paco Peña and his sextet will bring the true spirit of flamenco to audiences all over the world.

As guitarist, composer, dramatist and mentor, Peña’s imagination, dedication and skill constantly renew this archetypal Spanish art form. As the leader of an immensely talented ensemble—in dance, voice and music— he has assembled a stellar lineup for his Folsom debut.

Critics don’t review Paco Peña; they rave - enthusiastically. In a review dated January 22, 2013, Brian Seibert of the New York Times  said, “Listening to the flamenco guitarist Paco Peña play solo, you might believe a few guitarists were helping him out, hidden backstage. He’s that good. And yet what’s most admirable about this modest virtuoso, who can hold an audience spellbound on his own, is how he surrounds himself with artists of similar caliber and lets them shine.” Mr. Seibert goes on at length describing the three dancers, “all marvelous” and his sextet as “excellent company all around.”

Readers of Guitar magazine judged Paco Peña “Best Flamenco Guitarist of the Year” for five consecutive years. Their program, entitled Flamenco Vivo, is a musical journey that displays the highest level of modern flamenco, highlighting the rhythmic complexities of its latest variations of dance, song and guitar. Flamenco Vivo also looks back to the most primitive and pure forms of this captivating art and pays respect to the legacy this tradition has left us. “If you only ever see flamenco once in your life, make it this!” (The Independent, London). He expands its horizons, yet never loses touch with its visceral emotion.“…certainly the most satisfying flamenco concert this reviewer has heard” (New York Times).

Born in the Andalucian city of Cordoba, Peña began learning guitar from his brother at the age of six and made his first professional appearance at the age of 12. In the late 1960's he left Spain for London, where his recitals of flamenco music captured the public imagination.

Venues for his solo performances have included the intimate Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, the monumental Royal Albert Hall in London, New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He has shared the stage with fellow-guitarists, singers and instrumental groups, bridging diverse musical genres, including classical, jazz, blues, country and Latin American.

Paco Peña: Flamenco Vivo performs at Three Stages on Monday, February 25, at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $25-$39; premium tickets are available for $49. Students with ID’s are $12. They may be purchased online at threestages.net, or from the Three Stages Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Three Stages is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, facing East Bidwell Street.

Landscape Interpretations By Greg Kondos And Mya Louw At Blue Line Arts

Blue Line Arts is proud to present two distinguished artists, Gregory Kondos and Mya Louw, in the Coker Family Gallery.

Gregory Kondos is one of California’s most prominent artists, and is one of the most respected landscape painters in the United States. His landscapes of Yosemite, the Sacramento River Delta, the coast line with its beaches and rocks, the Southwest, Aix en Provence, France and the islands of Greece, his parents’ home land, are known nation-wide.

Kondos has been an art professor for 30 years, and the art gallery at Sacramento City College is named after him. Over the course of his life, he has won many awards including a Dillard Collection prize, Lifetime Achievement award at the Florence Biennale, and being elected into the National Academy of Art, New York.

Oil and Pastel painter, Mya Louw, was born in Rotterdam, Holland.  She has lived, studied and worked in South Africa, Europe and the United States. Her formal, classical art training began at thirteen after being overawed by the mammoth work of Rembrandt’s "Nightwatch.”  Graduate studies, after obtaining a Fine Arts degree with Honors in Painting at Rhodes University in South Africa, were done at Polytechnics and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.  Her quest for an ‘ultimate painting’ continues with research and studies both locally and abroad.

Help Fido Find His Way Home

Placer SPCA is holding a Microchip Clinic on Saturday, February 23, at the Placer SPCA in Auburn, located at 1482 Grass Valley Highway.

Microchips will be implanted for only $20. No appointment is necessary.  Guests are asked to have all dogs on leash and all cats in carriers.

A microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, contains a code unique to every animal. Similar to a bar code, when the microchip is scanned it displays the owners contact information.

“When a lost animal arrives at a shelter or veterinary clinic, the first thing we do is scan for a microchip,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Fratis.  “When we find a microchip and the contact information is current with the manufacturer, a lost pet can go home that same day.”

The Placer SPCA recommends that every pet have an ID tag and a microchip. Even if your pet typically remains indoors, a microchip is strongly advised. Should an indoor pet get out, they can easily become disoriented and lost.

“Last year, over 2,000 lost animals were brought to our Roseville Companion Animal Care Center as strays,” said Fratis.  “We know most of them have people who are mourning their loss and even actively looking for them, but without identification the chances of reuniting lost pets with their families are heartbreakingly low.”

If your pet already has a microchip, please be sure to keep your contact information current by calling the manufacturer if you move or change phone numbers.  If you don’t know the manufacturer information, come in to the Placer SPCA for a free scan.  For more information, please visit placerspca.org or call (916) 782-7722 or (530) 885-7387.
