Special Needs School In El Dorado Hills Celebrates Their 20th Anniversary

Guiding Hands School, Inc. opened its doors with two students in 1993 as the first private business on the on the Mather Air Force Base after it closed. The school was established as a private/nonpublic school with a motto “Acceptance Of All, Exclusion Of None.”

Twenty years later, Executive Director Cindy Keller and Principal Starranne Meyers have educated thousands of students with special needs at Guiding Hands.

The El Dorado Hills campus (built from the ground up 15 years ago) now serves 170 students from Preschool through High School (ages 2-19).  Privately and district-placed students come to Guiding Hands School from 23 districts in four different counties.  Fully accredited for K-12 by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), high school students can graduate from Guiding Hands with a high school diploma.  Since it was founded, Guiding Hands School has been certified by the California Department of Education and licensed by Community Care Licensing.

Of this milestone, Starranne Meyers explains, “It is not that we have achieved our dreams, rather the dreams of others have just begun.”

On Thursday, June 13, from 10a.m. to 1p.m., the community is invited to join school administration, staff, current families, alumni and school district representatives in a celebration marking the 20th Anniversary of Guiding Hands School, including a Parent Resource Fair, Live Entertainment, Food, Art, Commemorative Items, Bounce Houses, a Photo Booth, and a recognition ceremony.

The event is sponsored by Big O Tires of El Dorado Hills, First Northern Bank, Sacramento Parent Magazine, Sysco, Law Office of Michael Pearce, Attachment & Trauma Treatment Center and Neuro-Feedback Solutions.

Rotary Clubs of Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills Presents Wine at Town Center

The Rotary Clubs of Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills presents Wine at Town Center, one of the hallmark social events of the community. This event will be held Saturday, June 8, from 6p.m. to 9p.m., at the Town Center in El Dorado Hills.

Rotary Presents Wine at Town Center, now in its 18th year, was conceived as an opportunity to showcase El Dorado, Amador and San Joaquin Counties' fine wineries, breweries and local restaurants and at the same time provide funding for local Rotary programs.

In addition to wine, food tasting and entertainment an opportunity will be provided to preview and purchase an array of gift items at our silent auction held throughout the event.

The Rotary Clubs of Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills are devoted to the youth both in our community and throughout the world working closely with Rotary International. Together they provide educational and health programs where a need exists.

Rotary's commitment to the eradication of polio has left this world with only four countries to go to complete its goal. The Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills clubs not only financially contribute to Rotary Club International's worldwide efforts, but sponsor local programs that directly benefit our own community. Such local efforts include the provision of academic and vocational scholarships for deserving recipients, improvement and beautification of local parks, the completion of an observatory to the stars that is utilized by the local school districts and the public at large, as well as a major contribution to the Jeff Mitchell Memorial Ball Field in El Dorado Hills. Your participation and support of Wine at Town Center will help insure that these and other wonderful programs continue.

Wine at Town Center offers top notch live music in two locations. In the amphitheater, The Used Blues Band with very special guest, Blues Hall of Fame member Darrell Mansfield, will perform. The Used Blues Band finished in the top 20 in the 2012 International Blues Competition. Local favorite Tim Dierkes will return again this year to play at the north end concourse.

Do not miss this extraordinary mix of local culinary talent, the finest wines and breweries anywhere, live entertainment with and a wonderful silent auction. VIP tables are also available. Tickets are $45.00 each.

Coloma Junior Guides Camp This Summer!

Looking for a summer program for your kids that fosters adventure, teamwork and leadership?  Junior Guides (JG) is a summer day camp that will teach kids entering grades 1-9 how to safely play on our most dynamic playground, the South Fork American River.

Two camp sessions will be offered June 10-13 and July 8-11.  The four day program, which takes place 9-4:30p.m. daily, includes professional guides/educators in a low student-teacher ratio, ropes course and zip line experience, scrumptious meals, industry standard rafts and personal flotation gear, insurance, shuttles and a lifetime of memories.

Camper’s safety and fun are the number one priority.  JG will educate your child about safe behavior around moving water, while showing them the time of their lives. JG rafting partner, All Outdoors, have been guiding raft trips for 50 years and has an unparalleled record of safety. Campers will enjoy days rafting, exploring the river environment, making new friends, and fun cooperative games.

Junior Guides strives to instill the following values in their program:

ADVENTURE- Nothing beats being on the river during the warmest part of summer.  Who doesn’t enjoy the splash of cool water and the thrill of running rapids?  It is our hope are that our programs will instill a love of nature and adventure that last a lifetime.

TEAMWORK- Rafting is a team sport.  The entire river trip requires the cooperation of the group.  The on water activities and games encourage cooperation, build confidence and ultimately enhance self-esteem.  Lasting friendships are formed when people play outside together and have a shared sense of purpose.

LEADERSHIP- Because the river is a dynamic system, leaders are needed to model safe water behaviors.  We help students create a voice, incorporate feedback from their peers, and learn to communicate in a respectful way, as they direct their teammate’s actions in the raft.

Program designers, river guides, and parents Sarah Canfield and Spencer Rubin founded Junior Guides in 2012 as a platform in which to foster adventure, community, water safety and leadership in our future river stewards.  Through their own guide experiences, they learned about camaraderie, leadership, teamwork and love for adventure that they have carried into all aspects of their lives and want to share this experience with our youth.
