FREE Canyon Keepers Hike This Saturday

Canyon Keepers, a volunteer organization whose members serve as docents in the Auburn State Recreation Area, is hosting a Historic Bridges Tour and Nature Hike this Saturday, February 22, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

All are welcome to attend. Historian Terry Cook will lead an informative tour of the remnants of the numerous historic bridges that formerly crossed the American River near the Confluence of the north and middle forks of the river.

Agriculture biologist Charlene Carveth will share information about the surrounding natural areas.

Cook will share visual aids and information about those bridges, from the earliest wood and cable bridges of the mid-1800s, to the towering concrete and steel current bridges of today. Some early bridges became obsolete because they weren¹t sturdy enough to accommodate auto traffic, heavy trucks and equipment. Other means of getting goods and people across the river will also be discussed.

The hike will be easy and family-friendly. However, some parts of the trail are narrow and not recommended for strollers. Small children must be closely watched as there are steep drop-offs in some areas.

Hikers will meet at the American River Confluence, near the Curved Bridge near the signboard/bathrooms, for this walk of approximately 2.5 miles. Hikers should bring water and a snack if desired. Dogs on leash are welcome. There is no charge to participate. A map of the immediate area is available as part of the hike information at canyonkeepers.org.

For more information, participants may call Charlene at (530) 346-7032.

Placer County Libraries Offer Zip Books Program: Receive It, Read It, Return It

Placer County Libraries have expanded their pool of books by participating in Zip Books, a program supported by the California State Library that allows librarians to pull from the "shelves" of Amazon.com when a book requested by the public is not available at their favorite Placer County Library.

When a library patron requests a book or audiobook that the Library does not own, the library will try to find and purchase the item from Amazon.com, or one of the many third-party book sellers on Amazon.com, and have it shipped directly to the patron's address. Once the book has been read, or heard in the case of an audiobook, it is returned to the local library branch where it becomes available to future patrons as part of the library's permanent collection.

The program allows only one item per Zip Books request, but once the book or audio book is returned to the library, another Zip Books request can be made. There is no cost to patrons to "check out" a book through Zip Books, and all Placer County Library members are encouraged to participate in the program, provided any fines and/or fees they owe to the Library are less than $5.00.

Zip Books requests must be made in person at a Placer County Library and participants are asked to return the item to a library staff person rather than using the book drop. The Zip Books program includes new and used regular or large print books or audiobooks that are available on Amazon.com. Books that cost more than $35.00 will require approval by the Library and videos and DVDs are not available through the Zip Books program.

Placer County's Zip Books program is funded by the California State Library through a grant from Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). The Placer County Library is one of only 16 libraries throughout the State that are participating in this program. For more information on the Zip Books program stop by your favorite Placer County Library branch.
