Book Club at Van Kleef's Art Exhibition At Harris Center For The Arts

Harris Center for the Arts at Folsom Lake College hosts the invitational "Book Club at Van Kleef’s”exhibition, January 10 through March 9, 2014, with a special artists’ reception set for Friday, January 24 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

A panel discussion with the artists immediately precedes the reception from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in PAC-1062 (instructional room in the Harris Center).

"The Book Club at Van Kleef’s"  is a group of artists from Oakland, CA who began a tradition of meeting to discuss art, life and politics. The loosely knit cadre has met weekly at the Café Van Kleef in the Uptown district of Oakland for nine years. The "BCVK" exhibits many different styles but they share a common bond of friendship. Participating artists in this show are: Mark Ashworth, Gary Burgess, Keith Ferris, Josh Greenberg, Bob Hernandez, Rose Kelly, Fred Kling, Robert Laney, Michael Mew, Bob Bagnasco Murray, King Shrubb, PeterVan Kleef, Norton Wisdom and Agnes Yau.

“BCVK” member Robert Hernandez explains, “The Book Club at Van Kleef's, after nine years of Thursday gatherings, remains an important conduit for information sharing and camaraderie. Some 20 strong continue to support and contribute to Bay Area art exhibits and an exchange of ideas and concepts in the art world.
As the art world explodes exponentially, artists must maintain contact with one another in order to remain knowledgeable and viable. There is no substitute for first-hand information on exhibits, lectures and books that are discussed in the weekly gatherings. The artists support individual exhibits and are constantly producing new artwork. People get inspired by what others accomplish, and the Book Club is a prime example of just that type of camaraderie.”

The Bank of America Gallery is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays when exhibits are installed. In addition, the gallery is open beginning one hour before, and during intermissions of, each scheduled performance at Harris Center.

Regular admission to the gallery is free of charge. Parking permits are required Monday through Thursday, and Friday before 5 p.m. Permits are available for $1 per vehicle from automated kiosk dispensers located near the parking lot entrances.
