Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival...Twelfth Night

A visit to Lake Tahoe in the summertime typically entails barbecues aplenty, soaking up the sunshine, hiking, biking and other recreational endeavors. But this year, my boyfriend and I were yearning for something different…something cultural…something we could reminisce about long after summer’s end. Enter the 39th Annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival. Held at Sand Harbor State Beach, “the most scenic venue in the world,” this event was just the ticket to a memorable weekend in Tahoe.

Our enchanted evening of theatre under the stars began with dinner in “Shakespeare’s Kitchen.” With the main gate open at 5 p.m., we had plenty of time to enjoy a mouthwatering feast of gourmet burgers and salads as well as a pre-show cocktail. Before heading into the amphitheater, we relished the lovely lake views and basked in the late afternoon sun.

The Lower Gallery Reserved seats provided a perfect view of not only the stage but the lake and surrounding snowcapped mountains, too. Sitting in a high-backed beach chair, toes in the sand and glass of wine in hand (small coolers with food and drink are allowed in) was an ambiance that no other theatrical experience can compare to.

At 7:30 p.m. sharp, the performance of Twelfth Night went off without a hitch. The play is a comedy of mistaken identity and passionate romance, teeming with stunning sets and costumes, music, swordplay and revelry – a story that will have the entire family laughing and sitting on the edge of their “beach chairs” with excitement!

For a truly unique summertime experience and one you’ll definitely want an encore of, check out the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival!
