Folsom Symphony's March 23 Concert Showcases Four French Horn Players

For its March 23 concert, the Folsom Symphony will present only three pieces – but they are masterpieces.

First on the program, aptly titled “Our Magnificent Horns,” is Robert Schumann's "Konzertstuck," a creative "concertante" work from the 19th-century European Romantic era. A concertante composition showcases soloists, usually more than one, within the piece. For this concert, the soloists are four Folsom Symphony French horn players: Angelina Contreras, Gary Suits, Guylene "Gigi" Tree and Mark Sheldon.

Schumann’s "Konzertstuck," which one reviewer described as "an invigorating and blazing piece of delightful music" and another characterized as “a spectacular showcase for four horns,” premiered in Leipzig in 1850.
The second piece is "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis.” The unusual name can be easily explained. English composer Vaughan Williams wrote his 20th-century piece to resemble an Elizabethan-era "fantasy" using a melody by English composer Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-1585). Many of Williams’ works are inspired by English Renaissance music.

The “Tallis Fantasia,” a beautiful composition featuring a string quartet with string orchestra, premiered in Gloucester, England, in 1910. The music can be heard in several films, including The Passion of Christ and Rowing in the Wind.

The evening’s final presentation is Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3,written at Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1883. The work premiered that December in Vienna, though Brahms continued to polish it for two more years. A music critic at the time wrote that, of Brahms’ first three symphonies, his “third strikes me as being artistically the most nearly perfect.” Its finale is "lyrical, passionate," then fades away to a quiet ending.
Listeners may be familiar with this symphony as the theme for the 1961 film Goodbye Again, and 1946's Undercurrent. Frank Sinatra used the tune for his 1951 song "Take My Love."

It is important that patrons buy tickets early for this performance; their February concert sold out a few weeks in advance.

Sellouts have become the norm for recent Folsom Symphony performances. Last season, they added three performances, including a third night of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, because of ticket demand. The Folsom Symphony is  also adding a second night to their upcoming always-popular pops concert, Made in America. The program will now be presented Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, at 7:30 p.m.

The May repertoire showcases the ingenuity of American composers with selections from Stephen Schwartz’s Wicked, John Williams’ Saving Private Ryan, E.T., and Schindler’s List, Copland’s Four Dance Episodes From Rodeo, Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto, first movement, “America the Beautiful” and the “Armed Forces March.” Guest violinist Dawn Harms will solo with the orchestra.

All Folsom Symphony concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. at Three Stages on the Folsom Lake College campus. You can buy tickets online on their website, folsomsymphony.com, or by calling 916-608-6888 or visiting the college ticket office.

For more information on the Folsom Symphony, see folsomsymphony.com, or call 916- 357-6718.

The 59th Army Band Concert will be on Monday, March 11 at 7:00 P.M.

The concert will be held at the Patti Baker Theater at Roseville High School (1 Tiger Way).

This concert is FREE, and not tickets are needed.

The 59th Army Band was first organized on May 8, 1861, as the band of the First California Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The band is one of the oldest units in the California National Guard and one of the oldest bands in the United States Army. Currently stationed in Sacramento, the band is known as “The Governor's Own” and has performed for nearly every governor's inauguration since 1928 and regularly performs at the State Capitol. The band and its small groups perform at dozens of military and civilian events each year for a wide range of audiences.

The members of the unit must maintain their musical proficiency at all times, and are held to all other Army standards including physical fitness and warrior training. The band's mission is to provide musical support to the troops, be ambassadors for the California National Guard, and promote national interests.

The band's 30+ members reside throughout northern California and meet one weekend a month and 15 days throughout the year to rehearse and support military and community events throughout the state. While some of the members work for the military full-time in various fields, other members are also civilian band and classroom teachers, health professionals, college students, law enforcement professionals, building contractors, full-time moms, government administrators, computer specialists and legal professionals.

The unit can be reorganized to create various ensembles including Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz/Dance Band, Pop Band, Dixieland Band, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, Jazz Combo, Saxophone Quartet, Clarinet Quartet, Fife and Drums and Bagpiper.

The Band is commanded by First Sergeant Kenneth Cassius. Sergeant First Class Tim Sanders serves as the acting First Sergeant.

Roseville's Environmental Utilities Launches New Water Efficiency Program

Roseville's Environmental Utilities Interim Director Ed Kriz today announced a new voluntary pilot program that helps water customers use water more efficiently.

The City of Roseville’s Environmental Utilities Department partnered with San Francisco-based technology company WaterSmart Software, whose behavior-based water efficiency program has been shown to reduce water use by as much as 5 percent in just 6 months.  WaterSmart sends residents personalized Home Water Reports that track household water use, compare usage to neighbors, and suggest water saving techniques.

As part of the new pilot program, 4,000 residential water customers served by the City may sign up on the City’s website, at roseville.ca.us/waterinsight, to view their water use information online and receive WaterSmart’s Home Water Reports. Residents can view how their household’s water consumption compares to homes with similar needs and learn simple ways to use water more efficiently. Enrollment is first come, first served with the expectation that the program will fill up fast.

“Roseville’s Environmental Utilities Department is proud to bring this new state-of-the-art technology to our customers,” said Ed Kriz, Interim Environmental Utilities Director.  “With improved visibility into our water use and targeted advice on the most effective ways to use water more efficiently, we all can reduce our water use significantly in 2013.”

Environmental Utilities is Roseville's provider of water, waste water and refuse utility service. Environmental Utilities also provides environmentally friendly programs for Roseville's residents and businesses that help promote recycling, water conservation, storm water management and proper disposal of household hazardous waste.  More information on the organization can be found at roseville.ca.us/eu.
