Yoshio Taylor Ehibit Coming To The Gallery At 48 Natoma

The next exciting exhibit at the Gallery at 48 Natoma features a solo show by acclaimed artist Yoshio Taylor.

A large selection of ceramics, bronze sculptures and drawings will be shown at the exhibit, which opens on September 6 and continues through October 31.

Yoshio Taylor’s outstanding ceramic sculptures have been widely exhibited in galleries internationally.

His work is recognized in public art commissions throughout the United States.  Public art, broadly defined, encompasses artwork placed in a public context -- on the street, in a park, on the exterior of a building or within the common spaces of a public building.

Taylor’s approach to public art projects includes historical, cultural and environmental elements.  Taylor creates cohesive designs with durable and safe materials for the public to relate to and interact with both physically and visually.  Taylor says, “Public art should reflect the cultural personality of the surrounding communities, enhancing the concept of harmony and serve as a focal point of unity within the community.”  His public art installations can be found at Mather Field Air Force Base in Rancho Cordova, Sacramento Regional Transit Light Rail Station, Sacramento City Service Complex, Roseville Civic Center Plaza, Plaza Escuela in Walnut Creek, and a large ceramic mural (17 feet wide x 32 feet high) at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.

To continue the theme of public art, a special exhibit, Folsom Collects, featuring examples of 38 pieces of public art owned by the City of Folsom, will be on display in the adjacent Community Gallery at 48 Natoma from August 30 to October 28. These public art installations are located throughout the city of Folsom in public places such as in parks at the Natoma Station neighborhood, Folsom’s light rail stations, the Folsom Main Library, 48 Natoma Art Center and Folsom Zoo Sanctuary.  Many of these sculptures were created over 20 years ago by now famous artists such as Yoshio Taylor, Robert Brady, David Middlebrook, Stephen Kaltenbach and others. Photographs representing these art works have been taken by members of the FolPho Photography Club.

The public is invited to celebrate both exhibits at the free opening reception on Friday, September 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., with refreshments, wine and live music. In addition, for this evening, a Folsom State of the Arts Fundraiser will offer a selection of silent auction gift baskets donated by local businesses to raise funds for the maintenance of Folsom’s Public Art Collection.

The Gallery at 48 Natoma is managed by the Folsom Parks and Recreation Department and showcases art by regional and national professional artists, area museum collections and traveling exhibitions; offering high quality original art exhibits that the community may otherwise not have an opportunity to experience.

The gallery is free and open to the public and art is available for purchase. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9-5, with additional hours Tuesday nights from 6-8p.m.  Free tours can be arranged by appointment. For more information please click here.

The Crush Brings Olympians to SkateTown in Roseville

Curling enthusiasts and Olympians from all over the US and Canada will unite in Roseville August 29th through September 1st for the ever-growing Crush Bonspiel, where competition meets culture on the rumored "best curling ice in the US."

Olympians Debbie McCormick, Jessica Schultz, John Benton and Patrick McDonald will be in attendance. Placer Valley Tourism, in alliance with newly local Wine Country Curling Club (WCCC) has brought this competition to SkateTown Ice Arena in Roseville for its second year; this time, adding an extra day to accommodate the demand!

About 40 teams will be participating, coming from Toronto, Alberta, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Utah, Tahoe, and all over California. This tournament has become the largest Bonspiel in California history. British gold medalist Edith Loudon took home the win for the last two Bonspiels, and this year, winners will be going home with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from Crush sponsor Silver Oak Winery.

Come check out this sensational event! Attendance is free to the public with drink purchase and other concessions will be available on site. Games will run each day from 7:00 a.m. until midnight, with a pub crawl on Saturday night and an open house at the Roseville Brewing Company. On Sunday, the final games will run from 2:30 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

"Usually we have to travel to curling clubs in sub-zero temperatures," says Women's USA Skip from the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Debbie McCormick, "but here we can taste wine, wear shorts and sunglasses, then go and curl — what's not to like?"

Folsom Lake College Announces September 3rd Auditions For The Crucible

The Falcon's Eye Theatre at Folsom Lake College calls for actors from the community to audition Monday, September 3, for its fall production of The Crucible.

The Crucible takes place in the scorching context of the 17th-century Salem witch trials and unravels a tale of human struggles both internal and external. The Crucible is a community galvanized by fear and suspicion, a wife betrayed by lust, an orphan girl blind with passion and obsessed with revenge, ruthless prosecutors, deluded holy men and covetous neighbors. Arthur Miller’s script pulses with the destructiveness of socially sanctioned violence, the power of hysteria and rancor, the blindness of zealots, and the heart of one tortured man trying to find his own goodness.

Audition Dates: Tuesday, September 3, 6:30p.m. Auditions held on a first-come, first-served basis.

Audition Location: Auditions will take place in the Drama Lab (PAC-1170) at the Harris Center for the Arts on the Folsom campus of Folsom Lake College, 10 College Parkway (off E. Bidwell St.). On College Parkway, turn left at the stop sign. One dollar parking permits are available at kiosks located throughout the parking lots.

Auditioners MUST prepare a monologue that is no more than 60-seconds-long from any play. Please no teleplays or screenplays or passages from novels or song lyrics. Also, please no original writing. This monologue should best portray the actor's strengths and can be of any genre. This monologue must be memorized. It is requested that Auditioners bring a full-sized photo-headshot and resume of acting experience, if available, but this is not required.

Callbacks: September 4 & 5, 6:30p.m., by invitation only. Auditioners who are called back will also be asked to audition by way of cold readings from the text. Therefore, it is recommended that Auditioners be familiar with the story of The Crucible before auditioning. Auditions and call-backs are expected to run until approximately 10:00p.m. each night.

Rehearsal Dates: Approximate dates and times are September 16 through October 24, evenings and some weekend afternoons. Minor conflicts with these dates are permissible. Significant conflicts with these dates are not allowed.

Performance Dates: October 25 through November 10, 2013, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30p.m. and Sundays at 2p.m. Additional performances are Thursday, October 31, at 7:30p.m. and Saturday, November 9, at 2p.m., AND Friday, November 1, at 10:00a.m., and Friday, November 8, at 10:00a.m. Performances will be held at the Harris Center at Folsom Lake College in the City Studio Theater.

For addition information, call 916-608-6800.
