7th Annual Folsom High Physics And Engineering Challenge April 11

Innovation--and catapults, solar cars, rockets, wind turbines, hovercrafts, aerodynamics--all to fly at the Folsom High Engineering Challenge.

Physics teacher Eric Wright’s eleventh and twelfth grade students will showcase their applications of physics and mathematics in 50 different projects that will be judged by volunteer Folsom High School teachers, SMUD, Intel, Aero-jet, CAL-ISO, Army Corp of Engineers, etc.

Projects will be judged using the following criteria: craftsmanship of project, presentation of project poster, quality of oral presentation, quality of results, discussion and conclusion on poster presentation.

This school year, Wright’s students have participated in a number of projects that tested their applications of physics and mathematics, including building boats that will be tested at a “regatta” event in May 23, 2014 at Negro Bar state beach at 3:30 p.m.

WHAT:  7th annual Folsom High School Physics and Engineering Challenge (STEM) and the 2nd annual “FOLSOM-BRATION” will feature 80 student teams and 50 different engineering projects that will showcase students’ application of physics, engineering, mathematics and the very 2nd Folsom-Bration celebrating the amazing talent in the arts, engineering and sciences at FHS.

WHO:  All students enrolled in the Folsom High physics, engineering, and art classes.

WHEN:  Friday, April 11, from 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

WHERE:  Folsom High School, Jill Solberg Theater Lobby, FHS Central Quad and Library
1655 Iron Point Road, Folsom
Contact Eric Wright at ewright@fcusd.org at the event to secure a visitor badge.

WHY:  Paper airplanes (aerodynamics lift and drag)—which are typically the source of student hi-jinks in the classroom—will have their rightful place, alongside catapults, hovercrafts, rockets, sterling engines, wind turbines, digital circuits, boe-bot robots, trusses, robots, telsa coils, wind turbine, 24V solar cars, rockets, the physics version of the dunk tank.
