St. Clare Knights of Columbus Host Father's Day pancake fundraiser for The Soldiers Project/Sacramento

Nothing succeeds like success. At least that's what the good folks at St. Clare Catholic Church in Roseville figure as they prepare for the Second Annual Father's Day Pancake Breakfast, set for Sunday, June 15!

The event will benefit The Soldiers Project/Sacramento-Greater Placer, a non- profit organization which provides free, confidential psychological therapy to active-duty military and veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as their family members and loved ones.

All-you-eat golden brown pancakes and all the fixin's will be served from 8:30- 11:30 a.m. in the church parish hall, 1950 Junction Blvd. (corner of Junction and Baseline Road) in Roseville.

The hosts – and expert chefs – for the event is the congregation's Knights of Columbus Council 12887. Last year the food fest raised about $2,500 for The Soldiers Project in ticket sales and donations.

Besides pancakes, the June 15 menu will include deluxe pancakes, eggs, sausage, country potatoes, country biscuits and gravy, orange juice, fruit cocktail, coffee and tea. The pancake breakfast is bargain priced at just $8 for adults and $3 for children under 12 years of age. The meal will be free of charge to disabled veterans and active-duty military in uniform.

For more information about the event, how you can help out or to make a donation to The Soldiers Project/Sacramento and Greater Placer, contact SK Richard "Ricco" Ches at 916-869-4447 or email him at riccoches416@gmail.com.

The Soldiers Project/Sacramento, named in 2012 by the White House as one of the nation's top 20 military service organizations, is comprised of about 45 volunteer therapists who last year gave nearly 1,000 hours of free treatment to soldiers and their families. Its unlimited services go beyond those provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs medical system.

For more information about The Soldiers Project/Sacramento and its programs, visit tspsacramento.org or visit the Facebook page at facebook.com/tspsacramento.

The Hit Men Perform At Harris Center June 8th

It's not the cast from Jersey Boys. Not a Jersey Boys tribute show. Not a Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons cover band. Members of this amazing supergroup of musicians, vocalists, arrangers and composers actually were the Four Seasons who sang with Frankie Valli. They were the Shondells who sang with Tommy James.

They are the authentic rock and rollers whose legacy includes hundreds of hit records from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

They now call themselves The Hit Men and are bringing their famous sounds and energy to Harris Center for the Arts.

Remember Gerry Polci and Lee Shapiro? They may not be household names now but back in the 70's, you bought all of their records. You heard them on the radio. Saw them on TV. Went to their concerts. So who are they?

They're the former stars of the hit- making factory known as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. These guys toured the world with Frankie. Recorded numerous hit albums with him. And sang the lead vocals on songs like "Oh What a Night" – the biggest Seasons hit of all time. When they met in 1973, they were two boys from New Jersey barely out of their teens, and the Four Seasons hadn't had a charted hit record in years. Along with Valli and songwriter/ producer Bob Gaudio, Gerry Polci and Lee Shapiro, they successfully transitioned the group's sound from '60s doo-wop to '70s pop with mega-hit songs like "Who Loves You" and "Oh What a Night," beloved hits that have been heard for generations and are woven into America's consciousness.

Spurred by the runaway success of Jersey Boys, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical based on the Four Seasons' career, these former Seasons, who are now in their late 50s and early 60s, decided to re-unite -- along with an A-list group of musicians who wrote, recorded and performed with Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, Elton John, Jim Croce, Chicago, Luther Vandross, The Ramones, Carole King, and other mega-star acts of the era -- and give touring one more shot.

Their show is an amazing look back through rock and roll history, including fascinating back stories of what it was like being on the road and in the recording studios with Frankie, Tommy, Carly, Cat, Jim and Elton. And, of course, there are all those amazing hits…with The Hit Men performing great songs from the Four Seasons songbook (from "Rag Doll," "Dawn," and "Walk Like a Man," to "Can't Take My Eyes Of You," "Marianne," and "Sherry"), plus other mega hits that members of The Hit Men helped make famous back in the day such as Cat Stevens' "Peace Train," Jim Croce's "Leroy Brown," Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," and Tommy James' "Mony Mony."

When The Hit Men take the stage, it's easy to see why their music has transcended generations. The notes are sharp, the vocals spot-on, the energy is high, and these guys are having the time of their lives sharing their musical legacy with audiences everywhere!

The Hit Men. featuring former stars of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons will perform Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 2 & 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $25-$39; Premium $49. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916- 608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, facing East Bidwell Street.

Todd Ellison & Friends Comes To Harris Center June 6

Hailed by the New York Times as one of "Broadway's electric conductors," Todd Ellison is one of the most accomplished and sought after music directors working today.

Returning to Harris Center for the Arts for the second time this season Todd, as host and accompanist, is joined by four talented vocalists from the Broadway stage, including Sacramento native, Teal Wicks. They will be performing some of the most romantic songs from classic Broadway musicals such West Side Story, Hello Dolly, Man of La Mancha, South Pacific, My Fair Lady and more.

Comfortable in wearing the many hats of composer, Musical Director, Conductor, arranger and musician, Todd Ellison trained as a classical pianist, like many Broadway conductors. But in college he realized that "he liked Hammerstein more than Haydn and took up a career on the musical circuit," according to a New York Times interview. He has been the Music Director and Conductor of the Broadway productions.

Joining Ellison for this engagement will be Klea Blackhurst, The Goodspeed Opera's 50th Anniversary production of Hello, Dolly!, and created the role of Miss Lemon in the Marvin Hamlisch/Rupert Holmes musical The Nutty Professor directed by Jerry Lewis.

Also joining Ellison is Teal Wicks, well known for her portrayal of the iconic green witch Elphaba in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Broadway productions of Wicked. Recently she starred opposite Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox in the Broadway revival and National Tour of Jekyll and Hyde. Miss Wicks was born and raised in Sacramento; Ross Lekites, Tony Award-Winner for his portrayal of Tony in the 1st National Tour of West Side Story; and Keith Spencer, A Connecticut Yankee, Broadway Bash, The Coffee Club Orchestra's 10th Anniversary for City Center Encores! and The Best of Broadway with Garrison Keillor.

Todd Ellison & Friends: The Romance of Broadway will perform on Friday, June 6, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $25-$39; Premium $45; Students with ID $12. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom facing East Bidwell Street.

Folsom Symphony Ends Season With Out Of This World Concert

The Folsom Symphony will close its season of international music with a more distant journey, Out of This World, May 31 and June 1.

Maestro Peter Jaffe, who takes the helm as music director next season, will guest conduct this pops concert finale, which this year features space-related music.

Both performances will be at the Harris Center/Three Stages theater on the Folsom Lake College campus, 10 College Parkway, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

The repertoire includes:

 • Richard Strauss' Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey (Also sprach Zarathustra): Unlike most films, this one uses a sound track of recorded classical pieces rather than a score commissioned from a professional composer. The music played a vital role in this movie because there is often very little dialog, and when there is, the music is silent. Strauss composed this work in 1896, and it premiered in Frankfurt that November.

 • Gustav Holst’s The Planets: The orchestra will play three of the seven movements from this suite: "Mars (the Bringer of War)," "Venus (the Bringer of Peace)" and "Jupiter (the Bringer of Jollity)." Holst, a devotee of astrology, wrote the music from that perspective, not an astronomical one. This series of "mood pictures," as Holst called them, begins with the tormenting music of Mars, moves to the gentler notes of Venus and concludes, for this concert, with the unconventional rhythms of Jupiter. The complete work premiered on Sept. 29,1918, at Queen's Hall in London as World War I was ending.

• Calvin Custer’s Star Trek Through the Years: Custer arranged the music from seven of the popular "Star Trek" scores to create this piece. The work opens with the famous theme from the television show.

 • Howard Shore’s Lord of the Rings Suite: "The Fellowship of the Ring": This composition won the Academy Award for best original score in 2001. Shore also wrote the music for The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien, The Aviator and Doubt, among many others.

• John Williams’ "Superman March" and "Love Theme" ("Can You Read My Mind?"): The original "Superman" score won three Grammies and a Saturn and was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe award. Williams also wrote award-winning scores for Schindler’s List, E.T., Jaws and others.

 • Josef Strauss’ Music of the Spheres (Sphaeren-Klaenge, Op. 235): After a celestial introduction, this piece weaves together many lovely waltzes by the less-known brother of the Austrian waltz king.

 • Richard Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries: Probably the most famous of Wagner’s works, this music may be familiar from several films, including The Birth of a Nation (1915) and the helicopter attack scene in Apocalypse Now (1979). It was first performed in Munich in 1870. Seats are still available for both performances.

You can order tickets on the symphony's website, folsomsymphony.com, by calling 916-608-6888 or by visiting the ticket office on the Folsom Lake College campus. For more information on the Folsom Symphony, call 916-357-6718.

Railroad Museum Calls Out For Volunteers

Fascinated by railroading history? Interested in working on a train? Enjoy working with visitors, children and school groups?

California State Parks, the California State Railroad Museum and Old Sacramento State Historic Park (SHP) are now recruiting adults (18 or older) who are interested in volunteering to help communicate the West’s fascinating heritage of railroading and the California Gold Rush.

For those interested but want to find out more information, a special, drop-in Volunteer Open House is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Stanford Gallery located at 111 I Street in Old Sacramento State Historic Park.

Volunteer applications are being accepted now through June 13, 2014. After an evaluation and interview process, volunteer training will begin on June 23, 2014.

Anyone who has ever visited the California State Railroad Museum and Old Sacramento SHP has undoubtedly crossed paths with a docent.

Each year, approximately 600 men and women volunteer for the California State Railroad Museum’s programs -- including weekend excursion train operations, track construction, restoration and maintenance, even clerical work.

Since the Museum’s 1976 inception, volunteers have contributed more than two million hours of service. A background in history is not required to become a volunteer. In fact, most of the volunteers in the popular program began with little knowledge of railroads or the Gold Rush.

As individuals become more familiar with the Museum’s varied and frequent programs, many volunteers take on additional responsibilities, such as conducting research or giving talks to community organizations. Upon graduation, new docents can choose to work in the Museum interacting with visitors from around the world, working in the railroad restoration shops on rare and unique railroad equipment, work on the Sacramento Southern Excursion Railroad, or other jobs in this dynamic and fun environment.

Volunteer training represents a serious commitment of 84 volunteer hours annually, but the hours are flexible and the rewards can be tremendous. Docents get perks such as a discount at the Museum store, preferential and/or early access to some special events and the pride of working at North America’s largest and most extensive railroad-related museum!

Volunteer applications can be downloaded here.

Completed applications can be emailed to volunteers.capital@parks.ca.gov or mailed/delivered to the Volunteer Coordinator, Capital District, 111 I St., Sacramento, CA 95814. More information is available at 916-323-9280 or 916-475-7969.

For more information about the California Railroad Museum, visit csrmf.org or call (916) 323-9280.
