"Flabulous" Felines Free to Great Homes

Flabulous Feline, Siren (above) is waiting for a loving home at Placer SPCA.

For the month of February, the Placer SPCA is waiving the adoption fee for overweight cats, in an effort to send them home with pet parents who will help them regain their svelte feline figures and live long, healthy lives.

“There’s more of them to love,” said Placer SPCA CEO Leilani Vierra, “but it will be to their benefit to go to homes where they can spend more time playing and getting a bit of exercise.”

The ideal weight for a medium-sized cat is between seven and 10 pounds. The flabulous felines are more than 15 pounds, and are in need of pet parents willing to pay close attention to portion control and exercise.

All Placer SPCA cat adoptions include spay or neuter surgery, microchip, FELV/FIV test, FVRCP and Rabies vaccinations, and a voucher for a free veterinary exam.

To adopt a Flabulous Feline at no charge during the month of February, contact The Placer SPCA at 916-782-7722 or 530-885-7387, ext. 100 or email customercare@placerspca.org. Visit http://www.placerspca.org/ to see all cats available for adoption.

National Wear Red Day is Today!!!

Red will be the color for Sacramento today, National Wear Red Day - Friday, February 5, and throughout Heart Month in February.

Hundreds of women and men will wear red and a number of local buildings and establishments will “go red” to make a statement against heart disease and support the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women, a movement that educates women about their No. 1 killer and empowers them to take positive action to reduce their risk.

Several Go Red events and activities will take place throughout our region during the month of February including:

Wear Red Day at Arden Fair Mall – February 5, 2010

On February 5, the American Heart Association will host a Wear Red Day celebration at the Arden Fair Mall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It will be a fun-filled and educational day, featuring live entertainment and free health screenings courtesy of local Go Red sponsor, Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute. A casting call will also be held to find the next group of women who will represent the Go Red For Women campaign. You could be one of these women! At the casting call, simply tell us how you are speaking up against heart disease to improve your life and those around you. Jiffy Lube will distribute free savings books containing over $100 in Jiffy Lube service discounts and more. California Family Fitness trainers will be there to show ways to increase physical activity. This is a family affair! Bring the kids to enjoy some play time in the kids’ area while you shop in the silent auction area.

Buildings Go Red – February 2010

Several buildings will “go red,” including the Bank of the West Tower and Wells Fargo Center in downtown Sacramento. The neighboring buildings will illuminate red during the month of February beginning February 4.
Hyatt Regency will be aglow and News 10 will also light their tower red starting February 5.
Sutter Memorial Hospital and Sutter General Hospital in Sacramento will light red and display red dresses around their campuses and hold heart health awareness events for staff and patients.
The building lightings are important visual reminders of the Go Red message that women have the power to beat this largely preventable disease by taking control of their heart health.

Maintenance Partners For Life – now through March 14, 2010

Now through March 14, local Jiffy Lube service centers will promote heart health and vehicle health awareness with its Maintenance Partners For Life Campaign, which aims to raise $1.5 million for the American Heart Association’s fight against heart disease and stroke. Customers can participate in the fundraising campaign by donating $3 to Go Red For Women at their local service center. In return, the customer will receive a Jiffy Lube Maintenance Partners for Life savings book worth $100 in vehicle preventive-maintenance savings, as well as nutritious recipes and tips for living a healthier lifestyle.

Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 3 killers in America. These and other cardiovascular diseases kill approximately 450,000 women each year—that’s about one woman every minute. The Go Red For Women movement aims to educate, encourage and empower women to take action to fight heart disease and stroke and live a longer, stronger, healthier life.

Go Red For Women is sponsored nationally by Macy’s and Merck and in Sacramento by Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute. The media sponsors are Sacramento Magazine, News 10, Radio Disney, 94.7 KSSJ and Bustos Radio.

Get Rid of Your Gently Worn Shoes...to Help Haitians in Need!

Every 9 seconds, Soles4Souls, Inc. gives away another pair of shoes to someone in need. The shoe charity has earned glowing endorsements from Hollywood stars and professional athletes, but the people that truly make the non-profit organization effective are those who clean out their closets to personally drop off their “gently worn” shoes at a participating location, such as Cyril Spinelli Child Development Center in Antelope.

For a limited time, Soles4Souls and Cyril Spinelli CDC will be collecting your gently worn footwear and/or donations to ship the shoes to a person in need, whether they are victims of a natural disaster or subject to living in extreme poverty. It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unused shoes lying in their closets. The charity can use each and every one of these pairs to make a tangible difference in someone's life.

“We can use the shoes taking up space in your closet to change the world one pair at a time,” said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. “We need our partners in Sacramento to 'STEP UP' and get behind our call for action. It’s one of the most simple yet profound gifts you can make, because it will greatly improve someone’s life in the most difficult of times,” he said.

If you've got some shoes that you'd like to donate, take them to the Cyril Spinelli CDC at 3401 Scotland Drive in Antelope on February 17, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Laugh Your Fears Away!

On Monday, February 1st, Sacramento will have a chance to witness the launch of a new style of entertainment.
Reality comedian Nick Lynch (pictured above) will teach an audience at Tommy T's how to get free of fear while incorporating live music and improvisational comedy.

"Fear has been the #1 problem in my life -- and that's saying a lot, 'cause I have had a lot of problems!" says Lynch. "Many years ago, someone showed me a simple way to have fear removed, which I practice on a daily basis. The goal of the 'Laugh Your Fears Away' event is to help the audience get free from their fears so that we can have some fun, and crack some jokes about what would otherwise be a very scary subject."

Here's the 411 on the event:

Date: Monday, February 1st

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Where: Tommy T's Comedy Club at 12401 Folsom Boulevard in Rancho Cordova

Cost: FREE

This is a free event, benefiting the Treat 'em Like a King Foundation, a non-profit which serves the needs of low income and at-risk youth. The show also includes optional food available for purchase and live music performed by Sacramento original rock band Izzy Strange.
