Children’s Summer Art Camps at the Blue Line Gallery

Beth Rohlfes recently sent us a press release on some of the unique art camps for children that will be offered at the Blue Line Gallery in Roseville this summer, and we wanted to share this information with you, our readers. Check it out:

All camps will be conducted Monday-Friday, mornings 9am-12pm OR afternoons 1-4pm, at the Blue Line Gallery, 405 Vernon Street in Roseville. All are taught by experienced teachers and professional artists. Each camp will include a unique opportunity on the last day of class: Young participants will help install their final projects for exhibit in the Children’s Gallery, including a small artists’ reception. Camp fees are $172 or $162 with member discount. Additional material fees, varyied by class, will be collected the first day of camp.

Professional artist Linda Green will teach two camps. Known for her large, bold face paintings on canvas and furniture cubes as well as for her children’s classes, Green will teach “Faces,” June 22-26, 9am-12pm (ages 9-12) and “Painting Abstractions,” July 20-24, 9am-12pm (ages 12-16).

Egyptian-born artist Maha Salem, also an experienced art instructor, will teach “Larger than Life,” June 22-26, 1-4pm (ages 9-12) and “T-shirt Painting,” July 20-24, 1-4pm (ages 5 & up; parents welcome). In “Larger than Life” children will learn to study shapes and shadow to create paintings in the larger-than-life style of Georgia O’Keefe.

Local science and art teacher, Jim Carroll, will teach how to texture book covers, hand stitch bindings and customize decorative pages in “Making Hand Bound Books,” July 27-31, 9am-12pm (ages 11-16).

Two cartooning classes will be offered later in the summer. Disney-trained animation artist Bill Reed will teach how to draw basic cartoon characters, including gestures, attitudes, expressions and action poses in “Drawing Cartoon Characters,” July 27-31, 1-4pm (ages 7-16). Gayle Streff, local artist and published cartoonist, will teach “Cartooning Class,” August 3-7, 1-4pm (ages 11-16), stepping students through the process of creating a completed comic story.

Folsom's Thursday Night Marketplace postponed for tonight!

We just heard that tonight's Thursday Night Marketplace has been postponed...here's the release that we just received from the organizers:

"Tonight's weather forecast and the threat of thunder and lightning have caused us to postpone the opening of the Thursday Night Marketplace until next Tuesday, June 11. We were faced with the possibility of a much smaller crowd, various vendors had called to cancel and the City of Folsom had also informed us that any lightning during the event would have resulted in cancellation anyway.

For those vendors who had registered for the entire 12 days of the event, you will receive a refund for tonight. For the rest of the vendors, we are asking that you choose another night to make up for this one and let me know.

So sorry, but in the long run, I really feel we are making the right decision and we will still have a great Thursday Night Marketplace, starting June 11."

Hopefully the weather will be cooperative next week and everyone can attend this wonderful community event!

Never underestimate the power of the written word!

I have to send a note to Hallmark to tell them this story...

Recently, I was looking through a box of old photos trying to find a photo of my maternal grandmother (to go along with one of her recipes that will appear in our July issue of Style-Folsom El Dorado Hills) and I came across this card.



This was a card that my younger sister WaLynda gave to me 22 years ago -- yes, 22 years ago (I admit I'm a bit of a pack rat!).

Seeing her words on the inside of this card just gave me such a wonderfully warm and gooey feeling — it was a wonderful start to my day.

We all get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our lives, but we need to remember to take time every now and then to break with the digital world for just a spell and perhaps write a letter or a note to a friend or loved one. Maybe in 22 years, they'll stumble across your words and be warmed to the core!

Best Lip Balm...Ever!

Sorry I've been away for a little while...we've been working like crazy on some other pretty cool projects that we'll talk about here on our blog soon, so stay tuned.

In the meantime, I've been working on our SWAG section, and one of the perks of writing this section is that I get to go out into the market and do some "virtual" shopping — you know, scoping out some cool finds in our local area. Yes, I know, it's a tough job!

So with that in mind, I must tell you about a recent discovery.

A few weeks ago, my lips were beyond dry. While I'm a Chapstick (the blue moisturizing tube, has been my old standby for years!) loyalist, my little Chapstick just wasn't cutting it. I was in my friend Jeffrey DuFault's Beauty Boutique in Roseville (dufaultsbeauty.com) scoping out products, and Jeffrey suggest that I try a new lip balm he recently got in stock: Tarocco Lip Balm.

To be perfectly honest, I was a little skeptical. But can I just tell you? Instant relief! I called him recently and exclaimed to him that this is the best lip balm ever!!! Truly!

I promise you that I'll never highlight a product here on our blog that I don't think is pretty darned cool. This one sure qualifies.
