Debra Got Her Booty Kicked!

Zumba – NOT your Mother’s aerobics class!

Ok, I dragged my sorry butt to work today after enduring the personal humiliation that was my first Zumba class last night at The Studio in Granite Bay. Sheila, our instructor, has moves that I not only did not know existed, but her energy and abilities were jaw dropping!

First of all, what exactly is Zumba? In a nutshell, it’s an aerobics class which incorporates samba, mambo, salsa, cha-cha and hip hop dance moves into one rockin' class.

Shelia kept the lights low to set the “mood” but in my opinion the lights are low so that we all don’t completely embarrass ourselves in front of each other. We were a class of mostly newbies, thank goodness. We all spent the hour trying to figure out why when our brains were telling our hips to move one way, our bodies refused to cooperate. I kept trying to shimmy and shake my booty but I’m afraid I just looked like I was having some sort of horrible seizure.

I, however, have never been one to give up, and I am determined to try again! Shelia said it does take time to conquer Zumba, but it’s worth it because once your body starts to listen to your brain the class becomes more and more fun and a work out that you definitely remember the next morning!

The Studio will have a regular complement of Zumba classes starring Sheila!! Check it out – but don’t look at me. My brain hasn’t yet sent the message to my booty.

Debra Tries Cardio Kickboxing!

Ok, well, in the spirit of the feature editorial for our January Style Magazine issues, I decided to (or was coaxed into) taking a cardio kickboxing class.

The Studio is a brand new facility in Granite Bay which features not only cardio kickboxing but Zumba classes, martial arts, Yoga, Belly Dancing and more.

It’s owned by local Taekwondo Champion Amitis Pourarian. She is a sixth degree black belt and a former member of the U.S. World Cup Taekwondo Team. She is amazing, and the class was awesome. It’s called the ACKC class which stand for Amitis’s Cardio Kick-Ass Class, and it certainly did that to me!

I consider myself in pretty good shape -- I got through the class without falling apart, but when I woke up this morning I was feeling the pain (yeah, I know, it’s a good pain)! I am bound and determined to get rid of what my daughter calls my “flabbageness” on my arms. You know that part of your arm that keeps swinging even when you aren’t moving your arm? Yeah, if you are over 50 you know what I mean! (Editor's Note -- Terry, our publisher, calls them Bingo Arms!)

I felt energized and exhausted at the same time, and I can’t wait to go back for another class on Saturday. In the meantime I’m going to try Zumba tonight at The Studio. Stay tuned for more info on that -- that is, if I can raise my arms tomorrow to blog!!

No, not a picture of Debra...actually, a picture of Amitis at The Studio.

Local Community Member Needs a Kidney Transplant

We just received an email from Wendy at the Roseville Chamber of Commerce about Raniee Sellers.

In Wendy's words, "It has come to our attention that one of our Chamber family members has a great need. Rainee Sellers, wife of Marc Sellers, of Vision Quest Information Solutions, Inc. is in need of a kidney transplant.

Rainee is a vibrant 29-year-old who taught American Sign Language and worked for the Elk Grove Fire Department before becoming too sick to continue working. Rainee has always been an active individual who even started a hiking group. Why are we letting you know of this need? Because the more people who know, the better chance of finding a live donor match for Rainee.

Why a living donor match? There are several advantages to a living donor kidney transplant, including the fact that a live donor organ on average lasts up to twice as long as an organ from a deceased donor. A live donor organ also allows the recipient to not have to wait up to three years on a donor list to receive the kidney -- often times the difference of having to go on dialysis or not.
If you are interested in learning more about Rainee and her need, or if you would like to learn how you could help, please visit her website at http://www.raineeskidneys.com/."

Thanks for the info Wendy -- we hope this helps Rainee!
