Family History Day at the California State Archives

Curious about the saints or scoundrels in your family tree?  Learn how to find those ancestors or revive your old research at the 14th annual Family History Day at the California State Archives on Saturday, October 13, from 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m.

This free, all-day event includes 25+ beginner-level genealogy classes on topics such as the census, vital records, cemeteries, maps, ethnic research, archives and libraries, and the Internet.  A class syllabus (nominal fee) can be reserved in advance.

The crowd-pleasing “insider” tours of the State Archives facilities are back, offering a rare glimpse at examples of historic government documents and how they are preserved and stored in "California’s attic."  Be sure to visit with representatives from 25+ local, regional and national organizations to learn about their programs and resources that can help you in this rewarding journey of discovering ancestral gold.

Browse through the extensive collections in the Root Cellar Genealogical Library on site.  As in previous years, many volunteers and exhibitors wear period clothing to set the scene of the bygone era of our ancestors. For details about the classes, exhibitors and registration, go to fhdnewsline.blogspot.com or phone the State Archives at (916) 653-7715.  The California State Archives is located at 1020 “O” Street in Sacramento.

Jumpstart 21 Basketball Fundraiser

The Sac Asian Chamber is asking for the support and backing of Folsom's Leading Young Professionals (FLYP)!

The Sac Asian Chamber's foster youth fundraiser (Jumpstart 21) will be held at Sacramento State's basketball court on Sept. 10th, from 4p.m. until 7p.m.

There are eight teams, representing eight local cities - Sacramento, West Sacramento, Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Rocklin, Roseville and Folsom.

Teams and Games:
*Each team is coached by a City Council Member, often the city's Mayor.
*Each team must have an elected player and a representative from the media.
*Each team has a sponsor (Folsom's sponsor is Intel) and each team must have 2 women players.
*Each game is 15 minutes, single elimination with great half time entertainment. So depending on how the team does, the team will play one to three games. Fast action!

This is the 2nd annual tournament, and a few rules were changed this year to make the game more fun and less competitive. New rules include:
  •  No formerly paid to play basketball players can be on a team
  •  No current student high school or college basketball players
  •  Men can not shoot inside the key
  •  Players do not have to live in the city they are playing for
The tournament is a lot of fun, and all the coaches from last year are returning - good fun for a good cause!

IF you would like to join in on the fun, please email chad@bowmanandassoc.com.
