El Dorado Hills Genealogical Society Meeting August 15th

The regular monthly El Dorado Hills Genealogical Society meeting will meet Wednesday, August 15th, in the community room at the El Dorado Hills Branch Library, 7455 Silva Valley Parkway.

The meeting begins promptly at 6:15p.m.. They encourage you to arrive at 6:00p.m. or earlier to become acquainted with the other members.

The speaker this month is:
Tammy Noe “Ancestry.com -- Discover the Power.” Do you sometimes feel lost with how to use Ancestry.com? Sometimes there are so many results from a search that you feel overwhelmed and many of the results don’t seem relevant. Tammy’s presentation will concentrate on various ways to search on Ancestry.com by searching specific records and locations, and using other filters and tricks as well as finding the research guidance you need.

Who will benefit from this meeting? Anyone wishing to upgrade their search skills for better results. The El Dorado Hills Genealogical Society welcomes visitors! For any inquiries, email EDHGS@yahoo.com.

Folsom Lake College Youth Chamber Orchestra Announces August 12 Auditions

Local youth musicians are invited to an August 12 audition for the new Folsom Lake College Youth Chamber Orchestra, with the auditions focused on bass, cello and viola. The auditions will be held at Three Stages at Folsom Lake College (10 College Parkway in Folsom), starting at 2pm.

The mission of the Youth Chamber Orchestra is to inspire music appreciation and excellence among children ages 12-18, and increase community awareness of and participation in the musical experiences of the youth of Folsom Lake College’s service area (Rancho Cordova, Folsom, El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, Placerville and surrounding communities). The Folsom Lake College Youth Chamber Orchestra is made possible thanks to the generous donation of The Robert S. and Star Pepper Foundation.

Student placement is competitive, and is ranked in order of artistic quality. Those qualities include superiority of tone, intonation, vibrato (as appropriate), dynamic range, musicality, and general accuracy. The audition will be adjudicated by highly qualified professional musicians.

To apply, please fill out the Audition Form at threestages.net (go to “Community” on the homepage and select “Youth Chamber Orchestra”) and return with $50 non-refundable audition fee by August 6. This fee will cover the 2012-2013 season.

The Orchestra Coordinator/Conductor is Dr. Evgeniy Sporov. Before moving to California, Dr. Sporov played the role of lead violin instructor at numerous music camps and was the designated instructor of the first violin section of the Jackson Symphony Youth Orchestra. Before moving to the U.S., Dr. Sporov was the regional supervisor for the string departments of 127 music schools and three music colleges in Russia. Dr. Sporov is also an accomplished pianist who has taught piano for nearly ten years. Dr. Sporov earned his Doctorate in Violin Performance from Michigan State University. He received his Master’s Degree in Chamber Ensemble Performance and a Bachelor’s Degree in Violin Performance from Glinka State Conservatory in Russia.

Rehearsals will take place every Wednesday from 7:00-8:40pm, August 15 through November 21st at Three Stages in Stage 3/Scott-Skillman Recital Hall. All students will be expected to be on time and prepared for each rehearsal.

The Orchestra's debut concert will be held Wednesday, November 28, at 7pm in Three Stages’ Stage 1.

Sign Up Now for the Pink Ribbon Classic Golf Tournament!

Presented by Marshall Medical Center, the annual Pink Ribbon Classic Golf Tournament is coming up on August 27, 2012 -- have you signed up yet?

Proceeds from this fun event benefit the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Fund, which supports breast cancer education, awareness and the Pink Ribbon Scholarship Program.

The shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. at the Cameron Park Country Club, 3201 Royal Drive, in Cameron Park. The Scramble format will be men's, women's and co-ed divisions.

Free Caregiver Support Groups in El Dorado County

Caregiving is a difficult and often challenging role. Caregiver Support groups provide an outlet to share information and feel connected to others who are also providing care. Take the opportunity to become connected and rejuvenated at your local support group.  These support groups are free!

Here is a list of the local support groups every month:

The Second Tuesday of every month from 2:30 pm to 4:00pm, at the Georgetown Community Center, 6329  Lower Main Street, Georgetown.

The Second Thursday of every month from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Hwy 50, South Lake Tahoe.

The Third Tuesday of every month from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, at the El Dorado Hills Senior Center, 990 Lassen Lane in El Dorado Hills. Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association

Free respite care is available to qualified caregivers. Pre-Authorization is required for respite services. For questions, please contact the Family Caregiver Support Group at (530) 621-6151.

Celebrate the Sacramento Zoo's 85th Birthday

Celebrate the Sacramento Zoo's 85th Birthday at the Official Celebration!

WHAT’S HAPPENING: The Sacramento Zoo will be celebrating the 28th Annual Ice Cream Safari with a birthday twist–cake! Birthday Cake and Ice Cream Safari will include all-you-can-eat Baskin Robbins ice cream and a special celebration for the Zoo’s 85th Birthday.
 
WHERE: Sacramento Zoo, near the corner of Land Park Drive and Sutterville Road in William Land Park.

WHEN: Saturday, July 28th, 4 to 8p.m. Cake-cutting ceremony with local dignitaries will be at 5p.m. on the Reptile House Lawn.

Celebrate the Sacramento Zoo’s 85th birthday while devouring 10 flavors of all-you-can-eat Baskin Robbins ice cream in a cup, cone or float. Don’t forget to venture over to the Reptile House Lawn at 5p.m. to sing happy birthday to the Zoo and enjoy some cake. Guests at the cake-cutting ceremony will include Councilmember Rob Fong, Miss Sacramento County Julianna Johnson and Humpty Dumpty from Fairytale Town.

Have a brain-freezing good time with delicious all-you-can-eat ice cream, all-you-can-drink Coca-Cola soft drinks, popsicles, face painting and live entertainment by the Hipwaiders.  Additional food and raffle tickets will be available for purchase.

Zoo volunteers are prepared to scoop nearly 1,000 gallons of ice cream in 10 different flavors at this one-of-a-kind ice cream extravaganza! See what flavor awaits as you stroll through the Zoo discovering old friends and new residents.

Advanced tickets for this popular fundraiser are $17 for general admission and $13 for children (2-11); children one and under are free. Purchase your tickets at the door the day of the event; $20 for adults; $15 children (2-11).  Tickets will be available at the Zoo, online at saczoo.org or at 916-808-5888. All proceeds benefit the Sacramento Zoo.

American Cancer Society Bark for Life of Rocklin

Bark For Life of Rocklin, a canine event to fight cancer, is being held at Johnson-Springview Park in Rocklin, on July 21st from 10:00 a.m. until 1p.m.

The American Cancer Society Bark For Life is a mini-fundraising event honoring the care giving qualities of our furry friends.

Our dogs are not just our pets, they are Companions, Guide Dogs, Service Dogs, Rescue Dogs, Therapy Dogs, Police Dogs, Cancer Survivor Dogs and Diagnostic Dogs, who with their humans, are joining the American Cancer Society as Relay teams.  They participate to celebrate cancer survivorship, to honor people lost to cancer, and to fund raise in support of the American Cancer Society.

Our canine "best friends" demonstrate unconditional love, security, compassion, and without judgment of cancer survivors abilities or appearances. Our canine companions leave paw prints on our hearts.
