Maidu Museum & Historic Site Upcoming Events

Maidu Museum & Historic Site has lots to offer in April (and the rest of March!) for your enjoyment!

Continuing Exhibits:

Our Stories: Judith Lowry’s Artistic Reflections on Native California
Exhibit Show Dates: Now - May 31, 2013
The exhibit, Our Stories, is a collection of vibrant, large scale narratives that Judith Lowry painted over the past 20 years. She uses symbols inspired by her California Indian roots, mixing her family histories with important oral histories.

Lowry, who lives locally in Nevada City, received her M.A. in art from Chico State and her artwork has been on exhibit in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. Included in this collection are beautiful examples of basketry on loan from the California State Indian Museum.

Exhibit Show Dates: Now -May 31, 2013
View remarkable paintings, sculptures, jewelry and basketry from 18 different Native artists on display in Room 123 on the first floor of the State Capitol building February 2 through May 31. Works from well-known artists such as Frank Day, Harry Fonseca, Frank LaPena, and Judith Lowry who have previously exhibited at the Maidu Museum & Historic Site can be seen. Each piece represents and reflects important elements of tribal tradition, embedded within a vitality of vibrant colors, textures and creativity.

Upcoming April Events:

Campfire
Friday, April 19 from 7:30p.m. to 8:30p.m. 
Sit under the stars at our outdoor amphitheater to enjoy native stories around the campfire. They’ll provide roasting sticks and marshmallows for a sweet program’s end. Museum doors open at 7p.m. Free admission if you show your Roseville Public Library card. $5 per person, $16 family of four, under 2 are FREE.

Night Out at the Museum
Saturday, April 20 from 6:30p.m. to 8:30p.m.
Join Maidu for a FREE Night Out at the Museum, part of the 3rd Saturday Art Walk. Artists Michael Rowden d'Portola and Patricia Mills will be speaking about their collaborative painting "I Am Your Chief," which depicts the Northern California Modoc War of 1873. This exhibit will be on display through June. Museum doors open at 6:30p.m. Program starts at 7p.m. Light refreshments will be available.

Yomen: A Spring Celebration
Sunday, April 28 from 10a.m. to 3p.m.
Celebrate and experience California Indian culture at our biggest event of the year! Spend the whole day with your family and enjoy the opening blessing, tribal dance groups, traditional art and craft demonstrations, native storytelling, Indian hand games, guided tours of the historic site and fun children’s activities. Shop at the vendor booths and don’t forget the Indian tacos and other foods available for sale. FREE ADMISSION!

Whole Planet Foundation Gala April 7th

Whole Foods Market, America’s first certified Organic Grocer is proud to bring a new and exciting event to Sacramento.  The Whole Planet Foundation Gala will be held on Sunday, April 7th at the beautiful Cafeteria 15L, one of Sacramento’s most popular hot spots.  Cafeteria 15L provides an urban and eclectic atmosphere and is located across from the state capital.

The Whole Planet Foundation was born out of Whole Foods Market's desire to give something back to those who have helped us succeed while focusing on the persistent problem of world poverty and hunger. The foundation was formed with the entrepreneurial spirit of Whole Foods Market in partnership with Professor Muhammad Yunus and Garmeen Bank, co-recipients of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

Placer SPCA Waiving Adoption Fees On Long-Haired Cats Through April 1st

They’re soft, they’re fluffy, they’re Dande-FE-Lions and their purring towards a home near you! From now until April 1st, Placer SPCA is waiving adoption fees for all Dande-FE-Lions.

Dande-FE-Lions are long-haired cats, looking for a home to plant their paws. Like the dandelion flower, which is said to represent the sun, these Dande-FE-Lions will bring sunshine to any rainy March day.

They’re not needy, they take root easy, and their love will only grow. While dandelion seedlings can blow as far as 5 miles from home, our Dande-FE-Lions know a good thing when they’ve got it and promise to settle in with you.

Dande-FE-Lions are available for adoption at all Placer SPCA adoption locations, including Roseville, Auburn and Pet Food Express. To see a complete list of Dande-FE-Lions up for adoption, visit placerspca.org/adopt.

The Heart Of An Irishwoman Comes To Three Stages

The Heart of an Irishwoman is a visual, audible and musical celebration of strength, courage, passion, great humor; the heart of Ireland and its women from ancient times to the 17th Century and on to the 20th century. "Our Irish culture matters: we come from it, we are shaped by it, we identify with it, we draw from it and we must celebrate it!" (Margaret O' Carroll, producer of Heart of an Irishwoman).

Sheelagh Cullen, one of the great Irish stage actors of today, weaves the story of the Heart from an Irish perspective ─ through the writings of Yeats, Synge, Pearse, O’Casey, Merriman, Joyce and many more. Irish letters, great Irish women writings, poetry, letters, and songs make this event complete.

Dave Pier, Executive Director of Three Stages, remarked that he was “especially pleased to be able to introduce The Heart of an Irishwoman to Three Stages in conjunction with Woman’s History Month. This story seems perfectly timed for our audiences.”

A relatively recent production from Kerry Records (An Irish Christmas, An Irish Hooley!),The Heart of an Irishwoman premiered at Bowers Museum in Santa Ana in May 2012 to rave reviews from the audience.

Kerry Records is an Irish owned production company based in Los Angeles. They proudly promote Ireland and its rich traditions of music, song, dance, storytelling, poetry and literature. As a recording arts label, Kerry Records encourages contemporary Irish music and the spoken arts, while supporting the performance, recording and preservation of Ireland's priceless music and spoken arts history.

Appearing in The Heart of an Irish Woman along with Limerick born actor Sheelagh Cullen are Dubliner Laura Solter who brings us a blockbluster ‘torch’ voice, straight out of the Irish ballad tradition of women singers which stretches back for centuries; Kerry-born and a former member of the Irish National Folk Theatre, Margaret O’ Carroll on piano; Bulgarian virtuoso Bella Issakova on fiddle.

The Heart of an Irishwoman will perform at Three Stages on Friday, March 22 at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 23 at 2 pm & 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, March 24 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $29-$39; they may be purchased online at threestages.net or from Three Stages Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Local Resident Gives Back To The Community To Prevent Domestic Violence

Do you know of someone who is in a domestic violence situation? The reality is we all know someone living in domestic violence whether we know it or not. No matter how extreme, the woman or man being abused may not even know they need help, which makes it difficult to offer help.

Since escaping the violence, Susan Hamlin, whose husband was convicted in the “Hamlin torture trial”, has looked for a way to give back to the community. Not only has she volunteered for the Center for Violence-Free Relationships and speaks quite often, she has now written a workbook to help family and friends of those living in violence understand the victim’s mindset and identify ways to safely offer help.

More importantly, Susan is taking the extra step to give back, by donating a portion of proceeds of her book sales to the Center for Violence-Free Relationships located in El Dorado Hills, California.

Susan Hamlin’s new book, A Guide for Family and Friends of Someone Living in Domestic Violence  – From a Survivor’s Perspective (e-Book), is a mini account of Susan’s story complete with a workbook in the back. Susan has been featured internationally on the Discovery Channel, ABC Primetime, as well as many local media outlets. The book is available at mcompublishing.com and on Amazon Kindle, and is an amazing insight into the thought process of someone living in violence and offers tips to those standing by someone they love who is enduring abuse.

Purchasing this book is also a great way to support an organization that is doing great work to end domestic violence and give back to the community. “I don’t want my family lived through to have been for nothing. I want to help spread the word about domestic violence and give back to my community.” said Susan Hamlin, author of A Guide for Family and Friends of Someone Living in Domestic Violence – From a Survivors Perspective. “The dame that results from domestic violence runs deep and lasts a lifetime. The violence does not have to be directed at the children to do lasting damage, and the sooner they can get out of the environment the better. I am making it my mission to spread this message.”

Hamlin is a graduate from McGeorge School of Law in Sacramento, California and practiced Municipal law for many years. Susan helped create a Survivors Advisory Council and volunteers and speaks often for the Center for Violence-Free Relationships in El Dorado Hills. Susan’s story has been featured on the Discovery Channel in Canada and the United States, as well as ABC Primetime. Local media dubbed the story as the “Hamlin torture trials”. Susan speaks regularly to different groups such as Sacramento State, Folsom Community College, law enforcement training and other community groups. She serves as a board member for WIN (Women In Networking), volunteers for CASA as a Capital Leadership Founding member; is a member of the Board of the El Dorado County Bar Association, and is on the Board for SPEAR, a teen suicide prevention for non-profit.

Traces To Perform At Three Stages

If the world ended tomorrow, what traces would you leave behind? Combining traditional and high-risk acrobatic forms with street elements such as skateboarding and basketball, all mixed in with some theatre and contemporary dance, TRACES, the acclaimed show by the Montreal-based troupe 7 Fingers, “Puts a fresh coat of thrilling on the notion of circus (New York Daily News)."

Think Cirque du Soleil, then put them on skateboards: As disaster looms outside of an abandoned warehouse, a group of young urban friends sequestered within attempt to leave their marks-- their “traces.” Fusing the traditions of circus with the energy of street performance, Traces is a tour-de-force display of raw emotion and physicality with touches of humor.

One of Time Magazine’s “Top Ten of the Year” (Plays and Musicals) in 2011, Traces is high-energy urban acrobatics,  “a whole new kind of awe-inspiring theatre” (NBC TV). It’s spectacularly anti-spectacle, relying instead on the fantastic abilities of the performers, individuals who appear to be nothing more than a group of friends—as easygoing and affable as the guy next door—until they unleash ninety minutes of unbridled energy that leave audiences breathless.

The company Les 7 Doigts de la Main translates literally as “the 7 fingers of the hand.” It is a twist on a French idiom (“the five fingers of the hand”) used to describe distinct parts united tightly, moving in coordination towards one common goal. Here it refers to the seven founding directors of the company (Shana Carroll, Isabelle Chasse, Patrick Léonard, Faon Shane, Gypsy Snider, Sébastien Soldevila and Samuel Tétreault) who, by combining their distinct talents and experiences, work towards their common artistic goals with the beautifully awkward dexterity of a 7-fingered hand.

Traces will perform in Three Stages on Monday, March 25, 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, March 26, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $29-$49; Premium tickets are available for $59; they may be purchased online at threestages.net or from Three Stages Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time.
