Campfire: Friday, May 18 from 7:30pm-8:30pm
Sit under the stars at our outdoor amphitheater to enjoy native stories around the campfire. We’ll provide roasting sticks and marshmallows for a sweet program’s end. Museum doors open at 7pm.
Night Out at the Museum: Saturday, May 18 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Come for a FREE “Night Out at the Museum,” part of the3rd Saturday Art Walk. April Moore will speak about some misconceptions of native traditions. Artists Billy Hawk Enos and Winema Marie Suehead will also speak about their new exhibits. Museum doors open at 6:30pm. Program starts at 7pm. Light refreshments will be available.
Rock Art Mysteries: Saturday, May 18, 8pm-9pm
Take a walk through our historic site to observe petroglyphs by lantern light- the best way to see them. Journey back in time and explore ideas about the purpose of these mysterious symbols carved in stone thousands of years ago. Museum doors open at 6:30pm. Lantern tour starts at 8pm, following the FREE “Night Out at the Museum” event. Fees: $6 per person.

Billy Hawk Enos: Traditions Learned Through Time

“Traditions Learned Through Time” includes mixed media and acrylic paintings honoring the cultural traditions of his Washoe/Niesnan ancestors from Chukam Pakan (Clipper Gap area) and Nevada City, CA. Billy Hawk Enos, a self-taught artist, now lives in Gardnerville, Nevada.

Artist Winema Marie Suehead is from Grass Valley, CA. Her paintings are comprised of vividly colored acrylic paintings.

Our Stories: Judith Lowry’s Artistic Reflections on Native California
Exhibit Show Dates: Now-May 31, 2013
The exhibit, Our Stories, is a collection of vibrant, large scale narratives that Judith Lowry painted over the past 20 years. She uses symbols inspired by her California Indian roots, mixing her family histories with important oral histories.
Lowry, who lives locally in Nevada City, received her M.A. in art from Chico State and her artwork has been on exhibit in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. Included in this collection are beautiful examples of basketry on loan from the California State Indian Museum.
Contemporary California Native Art Exhibit: State Capitol Exhibit
Exhibit Show Dates: Now-May 17, 2013
View remarkable paintings, sculptures, jewelry and basketry from 18 different Native artists on display in Room 123 on the first floor of the State Capitol building now through May 17. Works from well-known artists such as Frank Day, Harry Fonseca, Frank LaPena and Judith Lowry who have previously exhibited at the Maidu Museum & Historic Site can be seen. Each piece represents and reflects important elements of tribal tradition, embedded within a vitality of vibrant colors, textures and creativity.
