Sea, Sand and Stone Exhibit at the Gallery at 48 Natoma

Fresh ocean breezes, hot sand, tumbling surf and smooth stone are the images portrayed in the exhibit “Sea, Sand and Stone” at the Gallery at 48 Natoma in Folsom. Just in time for summer the exhibit looks like a virtual vacation within the gallery walls.

Three acclaimed artists depict the theme with breathtaking photography by Gary Hart, beautiful oil paintings by Victoria Brooks and stunning stone vessels and sculpture by Jack Richardson. The exhibit opens July 13 and continues through August 30, 2012.

Gary Hart has photographed the natural beauty of California, Yosemite, Death Valley and Hawaii for over 30 years. His photos and writing have appeared in many publications, most recently Outdoor Photographer and Sierra Heritage magazines. Hart finds some scenes beautiful in their quiet simplicity, requiring a keen eye and deft touch to identify and convey their natural elegance. He has an affinity for reflections of distant elements and their juxtaposition against nearby surfaces. “Whatever your muse,” Hart says, “evocative photography starts with the ability to convey your vision in a way that reveals what others miss.” His images are in greeting cards, postcards, calendars, and many galleries and private collections throughout the world.

In her paintings, Victoria Brooks strives to capture simple, emotional moments of human interaction within a natural environment in order to evoke a warm and pleasant memory for the viewer. She loves the outdoors and the beauty and charm of small children, and combining the two has become a hallmark of her life’s work. Victoria is a popular exhibiting artist and art instructor leading plein air painting workshops throughout the United States and Europe.

Jack Richardson has been turning stone for over twenty years. “I wake in the morning eager to get to the shop where I work in voluntary solitude, amid dust, raw stones, unfinished pieces and the newest generation of turning tools. The stones change, and the tools evolve. The dust, however, remains a constant, as does the conviction that the next piece will be the best I have ever made.” His work is a synthesis of pottery and stone carving, using the classic shapes of Oriental and European ceramics turned from soapstone, talc and alabaster to make container forms. These forms are functional as well as decorative. They can be eaten from and displayed as works of art. They are as tactile as good pottery, but have the special qualities that only stone can impart.

In the adjacent Community Gallery at 48 Natoma, the Annual Student Show will feature the artwork from adult classes taught at the Art Center in watercolor, oil painting, Chinese Brush painting, photography and ceramics. This is a great display highlighting the terrific art being taught and created at the Art Center at 48 Natoma.

The opening reception for both exhibits will be held on Friday, July 13, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00pm with live jazz music and refreshments.  The exhibits are free and open to the public and art is available for purchase. Hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, with additional hours on Thursday nights from 6:00-8:00pm. Group and free school tours can be arranged by appointment. To request additional gallery information, or to schedule a tour, contact the gallery coordinator, Cindy Abraham, (916)355-7285, or cabraham@folsom.ca.us .

Wings, Wine and Art!

When do those three things mix? We know art and wine are pretty typical for charity functions, but bald eagles aren't usually thrown in the mix. But that's what will be going on at the High Hand Nursery (Sierra foothills) where the benefit bash for the Gold Country Wildlife Rescue is happening.

The organization is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured wild animals. At the benefit, which will take place in the historic High Hand fruit sheds, you'll have a chance to peruse local work by High Hand Art Gallery artists and learn all about rescued birds of prey. There will also be some birds mingling with guests. Now that's an idea we haven't heard about!

And of course, we didn't forget the wine! There will be light hors d’oeuvres and a complimentary glass of wine with the option to purchase more beverages. You also will have a chance to win a fabulous raffle prize!

For more information and to purchase tickets, visit highhand.com or call (916) 652-2065.

WHEN: February 19
WHERE: High Hand Nursery, 3750 Taylor Road, Loomis
TIME: 6 p.m.
COST: $10

All The News That's Fit to Print at The Gallery at 48 Natoma

“Arnold”, illustration by Charles Waltmire, courtesy of the Sacramento Bee

While we all are increasingly more dependent on up-to-the-minute news, there is a dying breed of art that has resulted from the current technology age of Twitter, Blackberries and the Internet.

As the public refers to these quick and transitory forms of the media, the sometimes brilliant work of the illustrator has become more and more rare. Many newspapers and media sources are terminating the use of original art to illustrate articles.

In a fantastic display at the Gallery at 48 Natoma, three artists work of famous faces and events will be highlighted in the exhibit, “All That’s Fit to Print” from March 19 to May 6, 2010.

Former artist from the Sacramento Bee, Charles Waltmire will show a fifteen year retrospective of his cover art for the award-wining newspaper. Illustrating memorable news articles in regional, national and international news with his breathtakingly realistic paintings of celebrities, political figures and national events his work has been widely recognized.

Along with this exciting collection of illustrations, the gallery will showcase the ceramic works of Karen Calden Fulk. Her entertaining pieces capture more famous likenesses of movie stars, historical figures and politicians.

“Lucy”, ceramic by Karen Calden Fulk

In a companion exhibit at the gallery, Ms. Fulk will show her whimsical character sketches along with notable courtroom art by Vicki Behringer. Famous national courtroom trials such as those of Michael Jackson, Scott Peterson, and Barry Bonds, to name a few, will be highlighted.

No one should miss this important art exhibit at the Gallery at 48 Natoma this spring - it might be your last chance to see this remarkable form of art.

The opening reception for both exhibits is Friday, March 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and will include live music by the multi-talented Charles Waltmire’s own band, Garageland Rodeo (he also plays the drums). Wine and refreshments will be sponsored by the Folsom Patrons of the Arts.

The artists’ reception and the exhibit are free and open to the public and art is available for purchase.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with additional hours on some week nights and Saturdays. Please call the gallery for holiday, evening and weekend hours. Special group and free school tours can be arranged by appointment.

To request additional gallery information, or to schedule a tour, please contact the gallery coordinator, Cindy Abraham, (916) 351-3506, or cabraham@folsom.ca.us.
