Auburn Art Walk This Thursday

The Auburn Art Walk returns to Old Town and Downtown Auburn from 6:00 to 9:00pm on Thursday, June 14. Enjoy an evening of live music and conversations with artists in over two dozen businesses.  Here are a few highlights of this month's Art Walk:

The Arts Building Gallery debuts "30 & Under," a first ever collection of work by our area's most talented young artists. Also on display downstairs at The Arts Building are works by students of Linda Green.

Across the street at Monkey Cat Restaurant you'll find the work of Elora Milby, a talented young artist who is co-curating the "30 & Under" show at The Arts Building.

Southside Art Center artists celebrate the theme "Over the Rainbow" in their group show. Other group shows include Aubrey Straub, Patricia Bradley and students of Traci Owens at Studio Eight 02, and watercolor students of Sonya Hamilton at the Chocolate Shoppe and Gift Emporium.

Tango Frozen Yogurt features the whimsical, dream-like acrylic paintings of Kara Maria Schunk, which incorporate florescent colors and glitter.

Enjoy the hand-painted boxes of Vivian Justus at Gimme Cake Too. Using cigar boxes and a variety of hand-crafted finishes, each of these functional boxes is a true keepsake.

At Sierra Moon Goldsmiths you'll find assemblage, monotype and collage pieces created by Diane Rukhala Bell, who whimsically incorporates collected remnants of old quarry sheds into her collages.

Live music provided by the Auburn Arts Commission includes The Old West Trio at Herschel Young Park in Old Town and Sambandha World Music at the Clock Tower. Also, Music and Poetry will be in the Garden at the Old Library Art Studios, where you'll also find works by the students of artists in residence Thien Dao and Paula Amerine.

Sponsored Blog Post: Sacramento Area Mixed Media Artists On Display

Mark your calendar for May 19, 2012 for the 5th anniversary of Outside the Box, a benefit for Placer Arts, an organization dedicated to supporting arts and humanites throughout Placer county.

In January, while we were all just recovering from holiday cheer, 100 Northern California Artists from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe stopped by The Arts Building Gallery at 808 Lincoln Way in downtown Auburn to pick up a plain wooden box.

Their assignment was to transform the box into a work of art in any media. They have two months to ‘be the box’, discover their muse, and create a piece of art worthy of their legacy. At the end of March these art pieces are lovingly presented to PlacerArts, carefully photographed and displayed for you to view beginning Thursday, April 12 at 4pm. The Outside the Box exhibit kicks off the first Auburn Art Walk of the season.

UC Davis Visual Presentation Professor Emeritus Dolph Gotelli judged last year’s event. He recognized artists based upon the overall impact, the artist’s command of the media and the message it communicated:

  • Best of Show was awarded to Nancy Hakala’s “After the Quake” (see photo above by Steve Hubbard).
  • Most Outside the Box was awarded to Traci Owens for “Between the Lines”
  • Most Original and Imaginative was awarded to J. Randall Smith for “Towhee Box”
  • Honorable Mentions were awarded to Brad Baldwin and Wade Martindale for “Super Nova and to Carlagaye Olson for “Is There More To Life Than Can Be Seen with the Naked Eye”

See photos of other award-winning boxes here!

This year’s Boxes can be viewed at The Arts Building Gallery, 808 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA beginning April 12 (First Auburn Art Walk of the season).

Key dates:

  • Thursday, April 12 – Gallery opens free to public at 4pm. Silent auction bidding begin
  • Friday, April 27 – Celebrate Your Taste 7pm Placer County wine, music and food event (ticketed)
  • Saturday, May 19 – Live Art Auction with wine and music free entry

Outside the Box is program and benefit event of PlacerArts. For more information, please visit PlacerArts.org
