The Hit Men Perform At Harris Center June 8th

It's not the cast from Jersey Boys. Not a Jersey Boys tribute show. Not a Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons cover band. Members of this amazing supergroup of musicians, vocalists, arrangers and composers actually were the Four Seasons who sang with Frankie Valli. They were the Shondells who sang with Tommy James.

They are the authentic rock and rollers whose legacy includes hundreds of hit records from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

They now call themselves The Hit Men and are bringing their famous sounds and energy to Harris Center for the Arts.

Remember Gerry Polci and Lee Shapiro? They may not be household names now but back in the 70's, you bought all of their records. You heard them on the radio. Saw them on TV. Went to their concerts. So who are they?

They're the former stars of the hit- making factory known as Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. These guys toured the world with Frankie. Recorded numerous hit albums with him. And sang the lead vocals on songs like "Oh What a Night" – the biggest Seasons hit of all time. When they met in 1973, they were two boys from New Jersey barely out of their teens, and the Four Seasons hadn't had a charted hit record in years. Along with Valli and songwriter/ producer Bob Gaudio, Gerry Polci and Lee Shapiro, they successfully transitioned the group's sound from '60s doo-wop to '70s pop with mega-hit songs like "Who Loves You" and "Oh What a Night," beloved hits that have been heard for generations and are woven into America's consciousness.

Spurred by the runaway success of Jersey Boys, the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical based on the Four Seasons' career, these former Seasons, who are now in their late 50s and early 60s, decided to re-unite -- along with an A-list group of musicians who wrote, recorded and performed with Carly Simon, Cat Stevens, Elton John, Jim Croce, Chicago, Luther Vandross, The Ramones, Carole King, and other mega-star acts of the era -- and give touring one more shot.

Their show is an amazing look back through rock and roll history, including fascinating back stories of what it was like being on the road and in the recording studios with Frankie, Tommy, Carly, Cat, Jim and Elton. And, of course, there are all those amazing hits…with The Hit Men performing great songs from the Four Seasons songbook (from "Rag Doll," "Dawn," and "Walk Like a Man," to "Can't Take My Eyes Of You," "Marianne," and "Sherry"), plus other mega hits that members of The Hit Men helped make famous back in the day such as Cat Stevens' "Peace Train," Jim Croce's "Leroy Brown," Carly Simon's "You're So Vain," and Tommy James' "Mony Mony."

When The Hit Men take the stage, it's easy to see why their music has transcended generations. The notes are sharp, the vocals spot-on, the energy is high, and these guys are having the time of their lives sharing their musical legacy with audiences everywhere!

The Hit Men. featuring former stars of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons will perform Sunday, June 8, 2014 at 2 & 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $25-$39; Premium $49. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916- 608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Todd Ellison & Friends Comes To Harris Center June 6

Hailed by the New York Times as one of "Broadway's electric conductors," Todd Ellison is one of the most accomplished and sought after music directors working today.

Returning to Harris Center for the Arts for the second time this season Todd, as host and accompanist, is joined by four talented vocalists from the Broadway stage, including Sacramento native, Teal Wicks. They will be performing some of the most romantic songs from classic Broadway musicals such West Side Story, Hello Dolly, Man of La Mancha, South Pacific, My Fair Lady and more.

Comfortable in wearing the many hats of composer, Musical Director, Conductor, arranger and musician, Todd Ellison trained as a classical pianist, like many Broadway conductors. But in college he realized that "he liked Hammerstein more than Haydn and took up a career on the musical circuit," according to a New York Times interview. He has been the Music Director and Conductor of the Broadway productions.

Joining Ellison for this engagement will be Klea Blackhurst, The Goodspeed Opera's 50th Anniversary production of Hello, Dolly!, and created the role of Miss Lemon in the Marvin Hamlisch/Rupert Holmes musical The Nutty Professor directed by Jerry Lewis.

Also joining Ellison is Teal Wicks, well known for her portrayal of the iconic green witch Elphaba in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Broadway productions of Wicked. Recently she starred opposite Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox in the Broadway revival and National Tour of Jekyll and Hyde. Miss Wicks was born and raised in Sacramento; Ross Lekites, Tony Award-Winner for his portrayal of Tony in the 1st National Tour of West Side Story; and Keith Spencer, A Connecticut Yankee, Broadway Bash, The Coffee Club Orchestra's 10th Anniversary for City Center Encores! and The Best of Broadway with Garrison Keillor.

California Theatre Center Returns To Harris Center May 11 Presenting The Ugly Duckling

In an adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Anderson fairytale, The Ugly Duckling discovers that as he passes through the awkwardness of youth to the grace of maturity he becomes a handsome swan.

The nationally-recognized California Theatre Center returns to Harris Center for its fourth and final performances of beloved children’s tales this season.

A Folsom favorite for many years, California Theatre Center has repeatedly been recognized as the top professional theatre for young American audiences. Having twice opened the season at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, CTC creates quality experiences for youth and families alike. As an ensemble theater company, CTC employs a company of approximately two dozen versatile actors and theater professionals who perform and staff both local and touring productions

This classic tale, adapted and directed by CTC’s General Director Gayle Cornelison, tells the story of a little duckling that was very sad because he thought he was the ugliest amongst all his brothers and sisters. They would not play with him and teased him mercilessly.

He decided to leave home and went far away into the woods where he saw a cottage of an old woman, her hen, and her cat. The duckling stayed with them for some time but he was unhappy and soon left. When winter set in the poor duckling almost froze to death. A peasant took him home to his wife and children. The poor duckling was terrified of the children and escaped. The ugly duckling spent the winter in a marshy pond.

Finally, spring arrived. One day, the duckling saw a beautiful swan swimming in the pond and fell in love with her. But then he remembered how everyone made fun of him and he bent his head down in shame. What he saw his own reflection in the water astonished him. He was not an ugly duckling anymore, but a handsome young swan! At last he knew why he had looked so different from his brothers and sisters. (Recommended for grades K-5).

In conjunction with several of our Partner organizations, such as California Theatre Center, the Harris Center Arts Education program offers a range of performances, lectures and demonstrations that enhance youth arts education, from international artists performing at Harris Center through the Presents program, to the talented regional artists who perform here with our Partner organizations. These shows often run concurrently during the school day.

Geared to address the California Visual and Performing Arts content standards, many of these performances are tailored to meet teachers’ needs: nestled into the school day; they are usually an hour in length and can include enrichment sheets to assist in integrating the arts into the required classroom curriculum.  For information on school day performances please contact California Theatre Center directly at (408) 245-2978.

A Couple Of Blaguards Coming To Harris Center April 24-25

Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Angela’s Ashes, and bestseller Tis, Frank McCourt, and his brother Malachy, also a successful author, joined talents to write an autobiographical account of their years growing up in poverty in Ireland, A Couple of Blaguards.

Though times were tough in Limerick, the tales spun by the brothers McCourt simmer with bittersweet recollections, ferocious humor and a parade of colorful characters from the priest who warns of sinners’ eyeballs exploding in hell to the McCourt grandmother who spits on Franks unruly Presbyterian hair to tame it.

According to Malachy McCourt, “This show is the result of Frank and me listening to the stories of our elders which in turn tunes the ear, the eye and the tongue to observe and give voice to even the most trivial of events. I think we had more fun than anyone writing and performing Blaguards, which has become an affectionate term for the rowdy, outgoing, and sometimes drinking sort of boys. If you don’t have a good evening, you should have yourself checked to make sure you haven’t died during the day.”

The role of Malachy will be played by Howard Platt, a show business veteran of more than 37 years. As an actor he has appeared in at least 100 plays assuming the roles of everyone from Abraham Lincoln to Santa Claus to Frank McCourt and brother, Malachy. He has made numerous comedic and dramatic appearances on television, most recently as Rev. Weber in What About Joan? He is best known for his roles as Hoppy the Cop on Sandford and Son, Dr. Phil Newman on The Bob Newhart Show, Marvin on Alice and Judge, Jonathan Stockfish on Evening Shade with Burt Reynolds, Charles Durning and Marilu Henner.

Frank McCourt will be played by Jarlath Conroy. Conroy was in A Couple of Blaguards at the Triad Theater in New York City. His Broadway credits include: The Seagull ,The Weir, The Iceman Cometh, On The Waterfront, Ghetto, The Visit, Philadelphia Here I Come!, Comedians. Off-Broadway: The Coward, A Man of No Importance at Lincoln Center; Our Lady of Sligo, A Life, Pigtown at The Irish Repertory Theater; Gardenia, Translations at Manhattan Theater Club; and The Matchmaker, Playboy of the Western World at The Roundabout Theater.  His directing credits include True West and Human Resources.

A Couple of Blaguards will perform Thursday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 25, 2014 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 2 & 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 2 & 7 pm. Tickets are priced at $35-$39.Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 am to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Alasdair Fraser And The San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers Perform At Harris Center April 16

Picture the Harris Center for the Arts stage filled with 50 fiddlers backed by piano, drums, cellos, guitars, harps and even a harmonica, projecting a sound lively as a dance band, as majestic as a symphony orchestra.

Front this merry group of music-makers with Scottish master fiddler Alasdair Fraser, whose humor, passion and charismatic playing set the tone, and you’ll have a rough idea what it’s like to attend a concert with The San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers.

It’s an evening packed with tunes, songs, and dances. The Anchorage Daily News raves “. . . this performance was a raucous, extemporaneous sampling of authentic music from the highlands and islands of Scotland.”

This group has been known to create such a two-way sense of fun and joy between musicians and audience that people spontaneously get out of their seats and dance in the aisles whether or not they know the steps to the jigs and reels pouring forth from the stage.

Founded in 1986 by Alasdair and friends, the group has grown to over 200 members from all over Northern California, the US and beyond. Varying widely in age and backgrounds, the fiddlers are drawn together by their love of Celtic traditional music. Prized in the group is the ability to play by ear, to feel the music deep in one’s soul, and be enough in the moment to follow spontaneous changes of direction during performances.

Alasdair Fraser, musical director of the group, ranks among the finest interpreters of Scotland’s music; his playing has earned worldwide critical acclaim. He maintains a busy performing schedule with musicians such as cellist Natalie Haas, guitarist Tony McManus and pianists Paul Machlis and Muriel Johnstone. He is the director of the Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School in California, where he teaches every summer, and has been artist-in-residence at the prestigious Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow for the past several years. His music is widely available on CD, and can also be heard on movie soundtracks from Titanic, The Last of the Mohicans, Wyatt Earp, Spitfire Grill and Treasure Planet.

Alasdair Fraser and the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers will perform on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are priced at $19-$29; Premium $39; Students/Children 12 and under $12. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 am to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street.

It's Magic! Returns To Harris Center March 30th

Harris Center for the Arts audiences has fallen in love with It’s Magic! as shown by consecutive years of sold-out performances and added performances... Now this show returns to Folsom with an exciting all-new lineup!
It’s Magic! is in its 56th year; each season presents the world’s top magic and variety performers in a production designed for the entire family.  Stars from all corners of the globe including Las Vegas, Europe, Asia and Hollywood's Magic Castle dazzle audiences with their amazing acts.

This live stage show is unique in that it features many of the top professional magicians worldwide, with each act carefully selected to represent the variety of the art of magic. Many of these performers are internationally recognized award-winners, direct from exotic showrooms around the world as well as Hollywood’s famous Magic Castle. Parents who came to see It’s Magic! as youngsters are now bringing their children and grandchildren to see this amazing line-up of famous magicians.

The tradition of an all-star magic show started in 1956 when two young entrepreneurs, Milt Larsen and Oliver Berliner, produced a show called Hocus Pocus ‘56 at the magnificent (now demolished) Carthay Circle Theater in West Los Angeles. The following year, the show was renamed It’s Magic! and moved to the 1300 seat Wilshire Ebell Theater in Los Angeles’ swank Hancock Park area.

At first, the shows played for a very limited time only. However, as the number of fans grew, the number of performances was expanded. The success of It’s Magic! proved there was a genuine interest in the ancient art form of magic. This, in turn, gave Larsen the idea of forming a full-time private club for magicians and magic enthusiasts. Thus was born the Magic Castle, which opened its doors in 1963. Many credit this show as the spark that rekindled the resurgence of the art of magic in America.

In 1965 Milt produced It’s Magic! as a solo venture with his brother Bill as Associate Producer. It’s Magic! then moved to the Variety Arts Theater in downtown Los Angeles in 1977 and played annually until the mideighties. Since its inception, Southern California audiences were treated to such legendary magicians as Harry Blackstone (senior and junior), John Calvert, Senor Wences, Richiardi, Chang, Mark Wilson, Frakson, Tenkai and Dai Vernon. The show also provided the springboard for newcomers like Lance Burton, Mark Kalin, Shimada, The Pendragons and Harry Anderson, all of whom have since become stars.

It's Magic! has two performances on Sunday, March 30, at 2 p.m. (Sign Interpreted Performance) and 6 p.m. Tickets are priced at $21-$34; Premium $45. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom.

The Pink Floyd Experience! Live In Concert March 23 At The Harris Center

Two years ago the music of Pink Floyd filled the Harris Center for the Arts to capacity audiences. This year’s The Pink Floyd Experience! is complete with a dazzling new light show, giant screen HD Video, full quadraphonic sound and six brilliant musicians dedicated to bringing you the most authentic Floyd experience possible, it’s “a must-see for any Pink Floyd enthusiast!” (C-News, Northampton, MA).

The music of Pink Floyd is more than simply an echo of days past. Pink Floyd continues to gain new fans. Nearly 1,000,000 Pink Floyd catalog albums are sold each year worldwide. On average, more than 8,000 copies of “Dark Side Of The Moon” are scanned each week in the U.S. alone, and “Wish You Were Here” and “The Wall” are also stalwarts on the Billboard Top Pop Catalog chart. Since the band's contemporary fans have long since replaced, or added to, their vinyl Pink Floyd collections with CD versions, clearly new generations are discovering the intense, cinematic, epic rock of Pink Floyd.

Without question, Pink Floyd remains one of the most influential rock bands of all time. Their record-breaking status is legendary. Today, years since their last live performance, Pink Floyd’s appeal continues and spans the generations. Their shows were described as theatrical with mind-blowing lights and unsurpassed sound. The show is not only onstage…it engulfs the audience!  In keeping with this tradition, The Pink Floyd Experience! is a full-on sensory assault   This is the show for the ultimate Floyd Fan, and it gets closer to the true Pink Floyd concert experience every year!

In this two-hour show, performed with over $2.5 million worth of production equipment on stage, The Pink Floyd Experience! should come with a warning for potential “retinal damage.” But fans won’t turn their heads away as the massive light show and HD projection brings the show right onto their laps. Even the icons that Pink Floyd have made their own – from the blinking eye to the marching hammers – have all been translated into clever hooks along the ride. Imagine your hair literally swept up by the helicopter that introduces their next song.

Hear the cash registers in “Money” or the clocks in Time run around the room in full quadraphonic sound. And not to leave the fans wanting for more, the show finishes with a 12-foot long Pig blimp that flies over the audience and balconies in final homage to Pink Floyd’s most familiar image! There’s much, much more from the classic airplane crash to floating eyeballs in the crowd...but we better leave a few surprises for the actual show!

The Pink Floyd Experience will take place on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 2 & 7 p.m. Tickets are $39-$59; Premium $69. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, facing East Bidwell Street.

Renowned Ensemble SamulNori To Appear At Harris Center March 11

Master drummers and dancers of this renowned South Korean ensemble share unique ancient traditions at Harris Center for the Arts.

International music and dance critics describe their and audience reactions across the world as "unbelievable," "compelling," and "soul searing" when describing the performances of SamulNori.

The New York Times reports that SamulNori amazed audiences at its New York debut in 1983 and is doing so again on its current American tour," 30 years later.

SamulNori is the name of a group of four dynamic musicians dedicated to performing and preserving traditional Korean music and dance. The name also refers to the style of music they created. Since these superb percussionists formed the group in 1978, SamulNori has sparked a renaissance in Korea’s music scene and garnered worldwide acclaim. The Boston Globe declares “the conservation of ancient tradition is seldom so much fun as this."

The Korean words ‘samul’ and ‘nori’ mean ‘four things’ and ‘to play.’ In the case of SamulNori, they refer to the four musicians playing and dancing with four percussion instruments. Founded by Kim Duk-soo, the group’s leader and master of the Changgo (hourglass shaped drum), SamulNori has become the leading traditional Korean performance group. The ensemble performs in many configurations but usually tours as a quartet with Master Kim at the helm. The origins of their music can be traced to what is usually referred to as farmers’ band music (Nongak) and ceremonial music. It also incorporates the influences of folk and religious music (Binari) and their intricate rhythms have become quite uniquely their own.

Over the years, SamulNori has toured almost every nation in the world including France, Germany,Austria, Great Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, China, Australia, Greece, Italy, Brazil, Israel, the United States and so on. On their tours, in addition to concerts they have conducted extensive workshops with local musicians to impart knowledge of SamulNori and Korean traditional rhythms.

In addition to their busy touring schedule, SamulNori is dedicated to furthering the tradition of their unique performance techniques with classes at the SamulNori Academy of Music in Buyeo, the middle province of Korea. They have been the subject of several books (including their own intensive instructional book) and have shot videos for many labels including SONY. Their 15 recordings are available on the CBS/SONY, Nonesuch, Real World, Warner Music and ECM record labels.

SamulNori will perform on Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $19-$29; premium $39; students with ID $12. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, facing East Bidwell Street.

Clint Black Returns To The Harris Center

Clint Black returns to Harris Center for the Arts on February 28th with an intimate trio setting in an all-new show.

His auspicious country music career started with a bang, really unlike any other. The debut recording, Killin’ Time, boasted five Number One hits—unprecedented from a debut in any genre—and he has since gone on to sell over 20 million albums worldwide.

Black’s continued success can be attributed in part to his deep sense of Country music history, and his humble gratitude in being an important part of it. The 1989 debut of his critically acclaimed fan favorite, the Triple Platinum Killin’ Time, marked a shift in the industry with a return to the more traditional sounds of the genre.

CMT lists this album as one of the 100 Greatest Albums in Country Music. Released while Black was still an unknown Texas-based artist and writer, Killin’ Time won Black a collection of awards that included: Country Music Association Horizon Award, Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year, American Music Awards Favorite New Male Country Artist, Academy of Country Music Best New Male Vocalist, Academy of Country Music Best Male Vocalist, Academy of Country Music Album of the Year (Killin’ Time), and Academy of Country Music Single of the Year (“A Better Man”).

Prolific singer-songwriter Clint Black has long been heralded as one of Country music’s brightest stars. His many talents have taken him even further, as Black has transcended genres to become one of the most successful artists in all the music industry.

To date, Black has written, recorded and released more than 100 songs, a benchmark in any artist’s career. An astounding one-third of these songs eligible for major single release also achieved hit song status at Country radio.

While it’s well-known that Black is an accomplished singer and guitarist, people may be surprised to learn that he is also proficient on drums and harmonica. Black has also flexed his acting chops with a cameo in 1994’s Maverick (alongside Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster), as well as with roles in films such as 2000’s Going Home (with Jason Robards) and the starring role in 1998’s Still Holding On: The Legend of Cadillac Jack. Flicka 2 (with Patrick Warburton) was released in May 2010, which was then followed up in 2012 with Flicka – Country Pride, which starred not only Clint, but his wife Lisa and daughter Lily as well.

Black has also performed on TV shows including The Larry Sanders Show, Las Vegas, King of the Hill and many others. In addition to a heavy touring schedule, Clint is currently developing a Broadway production based on the life of his friend Roy Rogers. In addition to his established business ventures and various charity foundation efforts, Black branched out even further with an appearance on Donald Trump’s hit reality series Celebrity Apprentice. As a result of the friendship on the show between Black and fellow contestant and Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton, the teammates are working to secure a total of one million dollars in matching fund donations for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation.

An Acoustic Evening with Clint Black will take place on Thursday, February 27; 8 pm, Friday, February 28; 8 p.m., and Saturday, March 1; 8 p.m. Tickets are priced at $39-$55; Premium $65. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra Presents A Tribute To Ella Fitzgerald At Harris Center

"The best jazz repertory band in the country” (The New Yorker) honors The First Lady of Song—Ella Fitzgerald—by seizing a special moment in American history.

Pulling original, little played arrangements done for Ella in the ‘40s and ‘50s—charts penned by superstar arrangers such as Billy May, Count Basie, Billy Strayhorn and Benny Carter— Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the ever-elegant Kim Nazarian will join together in an evening at Harris Center for the Arts of “fascinating rarities...each played with as much skill as authenticity” (Chicago Tribune).

Ella Fitzgerald (1917-1996) was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century. In her lifetime, she won 13 Grammy awards and sold over 40 million albums. Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless. She could sing sultry ballads, sweet jazz and imitate every instrument in an orchestra. She performed at top venues all over the world, and packed them to the hilt.

Called "Culturally important...spectacular musically... Precise, intelligent and straightforward" by the New York Times, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO) was founded in 1990 with an appropriation from the U.S. Congress in recognition of the importance of jazz in American cultural and its status as a national treasure. The orchestra, led by Artistic and Musical Director, David N. Baker, serves as the orchestra-in-residence at the National Museum of American History, Division of Cultural History.
The orchestra re-creates big band jazz as its composers and arrangers intended it to be played, stripping away intervening changes and alterations.

“Bless you, child. Keep singing.” Such was the encouragement jazz vocalist Kim Nazarian received during a brief but unforgettable encounter with her idol, Ella Fitzgerald. A native “up-state” New Yorker and Magna Cum Laude graduate of Ithaca College, Kim is a founding member of the Grammy award-winning group New York Voices, formed in 1987. She has recorded numerous CD’s and toured the world with this outstanding vocal quartet. For their most recent project, the group took on the role of featured artist with Paquito D’Rivera on his latest release for the MCG Jazz label; Brazilian Dreams. Ms. Nazarian is also a featured artist on a number of other CD’s released on the MCG Jazz label, including Afternoon In Rio with Joe Negri, The 21st Century Swing Band, and the highly acclaimed A Nancy Wilson Christmas.

Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra: A TRIBUTE TO ELLA FITZGERALD will be performed on Sunday, February 26, 2014 at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $25-$39; Premium $45; Students with ID $12. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net  or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 am to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, facing East Bidwell Street.

Kenny Werner Trio Performs At Harris Center

Considered “a clear virtuoso” by the New York Times and “My kind of musician” by Quincy Jones, world-class pianist and composer Kenny Werner brings his piano jazz mastery to Harris Center in Folsom on February 14 and 15. Joining him will be the rest of his long-standing trio, Ari Hoenig and Johannes Weidenmueler.

From receiving the 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship Award for his masterpiece, "No Beginning No End," to duets with Toots Thielemans and Betty Buckley, to his forty-year friendship with Joe Lovano, to the publication of his groundbreaking book Effortless Mastery—one of the most widely read works on music and improvisation, Kenny Werner’s influence is unsurpassed.  He has impacted an entire generation of musicians and artists.

Born in Brooklyn, on November 19, 1951 and then growing up in Oceanside, Long Island, Kenny began playing performing at a young age, first recording and then appearing on television at the age of 11. Although he studied classical piano as a child, he enjoyed playing anything he heard on the radio. In high school and his first years of college he attended the Manhattan School of Music as a classical piano major.

His natural instinct for improvisation led Kenny to the Berklee School of Music in 1970. There he sought tutelage of the renowned piano teacher Madame Chaloff. Her gracious wisdom and inspiration became a driving force in Kenny's conception: music conscious of its spiritual intent and essence.

Several outstanding musical partnerships began in the 1990’s. Kenny continues to play duo with Toots Thielemans, the legendary harmonica player. For twenty years he has played with and arranged for Betty Buckley, a Broadway legend. They made six albums together and she has sung his arrangements for small band and orchestras across the globe. He also has had a nearly forty-year friendship and musical collaboration with Joe Lovano. They have recorded on a number of each other’s projects.

In 2000, Kenny formed a new trio with Ari Hoenig on drums and Johannes Weidenmueller on bass. They released three albums, with Kenny acting as composer, arranger, and pianist. Peace – Live at the Blue Note, released in 2004, began a wonderful relationship with Half Note Records, the recording arm of the Blue Note Jazz Club. He created three CDs before the release of his masterpiece, No Beginning No End.

In 2007, Kenny Werner released his first album for Blue Note Records, Lawn Chair Society, featuring Chris Potter, Dave Douglas, Scott Colley, and Brian Blade, received critical acclaim for its fusion of electro and acoustic elements. For several years now he has also toured with his quintet featuring David Sanchez on sax, the legendary trumpet player Randy Brecker, Antonio Sanchez on drums and Scott Colley on bass. Their recent release on Half Note is titled Balloons.

Despite his creative output, Kenny is still focused on the music. “I am still more and more aware of the true purpose of the music and the people who play it: to heal and unite the planet.”

Kenny Werner Trio will perform on Friday, February 14 and Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 7 & 9 p.m. Tickets are priced at $29-$39; Student with ID $12. Tickets are available online at harriscenter.net or from Harris Center Ticket Office at 916-608-6888 from 10 am to 6 pm, Monday through Saturday, and two hours before show time. Parking is included in the price of the ticket. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, facing East Bidwell Street.

Enjoy ‘Romance!’ At Folsom Symphony’s February 8 Concert

Celebrate a romantic Valentine’s weekend with some of the world’s most heart-stirring music at the Folsom Symphony’s performance of Romance!, February 8, 7:30 p.m., at Harris Center/Three Stages. Tickets are selling out quickly!

This year’s Valentine program, under the baton of Maestro Michael Neumann, features Rodrigo’s “Fantasia para un gentilhombre” with guitarist Larry Ferrara; Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings”; Verdi’s Triumphal March from “Aida”; Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance No. 2”; Meyerbeer’s “Coronation March”; Rodgers’ “Carousel Waltz”; and songs of romance performed by tenor Robert Vann.

Joaquin Rodrigo composed Fantasia para un Gentilhombre (Fantasia for a Gentleman) in 1954 at the request of guitarist Andres Segovia. Segovia played the guitar solo in the work’s premier in San Francisco in 1958. The music is based on six dances for solo guitar composed by Gaspar Sanz in the 17th century.

Peter Tchaikovsky wrote his Serenade for Strings in homage to Wolfgang Mozart, the greatest composer of classical serenades. The four movements include a graceful waltz, a somber “Elegie” and a folk-based “Russian theme.” Tchaikovsky wrote the piece in 1880 “on impulse,” he later said.

The Triumphal March from Guiseppe Verdi’s opera Aida boldly depicts the return of the Egyptian army following a victory over the Ethiopians. Verdi wrote Aida in 1871 and it premiered in Cairo in December of that year.

Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance Op. 46, No. 2, written in 1878, brought the composer his first success. The piece was so popular he was asked to write another in 1886. The music is characterized as lively and nationalistic.

Giacoma Meyerbeer composed his French opera Le prophete (The Prophet) in 1849 to tremendous success across Europe.  The rousing “Coronation March” in Act 4 precedes the crowing of a king. The opera was first performed in Paris in 1849.

Richard Rodgers wrote the romantic "Carousel Waltz" for the Broadway musical Carousel in 1945. The play, the second by the team of Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, opened on Broadway to rave reviews and won several important awards.  Time magazine named Carousel the best musical of the 20th century.
Sacramento tenor Robert Vann, a UC Davis grad and the programs manager for the Sacramento Youth Symphony, will perform a selection of romantic songs.

You can buy tickets for Romance! on the symphony’s website, folsomsymphony.com (“Tickets” in the top bar), by calling 916-608-6888 or at the Harris Center/Three Stages ticket office at the theater on the Folsom Lake College campus, 10 College Parkway, Folsom.

Celebrated Fado Singer António Zambujo Appears At Harris Center In Folsom

A leading voice in the revival of male fado singers, António Zambujo brings his distinctive style to Harris Center for the Arts for just one performance on January 27.

With his earthy songs, honeyed tones and sensitive interpretation, Zambujo has emerged as one of the best modern fado artists. According to Le Figero, he has “The most beautiful male voice of fado today.” One night at a Zambujo’s concert a female audience member was overheard to say “If boys could express themselves like that, how easily we would be won over!”

Fado, the legendary Portuguese tradition that evolved in the port cities in the early 19th century, has a place on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. Unlike rural forms of folk music where a single culture is often responsible for the evolution of the genre, fado is an urban folk music, originating in the port city of Lisbon, where many cultures met and merged over centuries.

The expression of fado is beautiful and melancholy, characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often infused with a characteristic sentiment of resignation, fatefulness and melancholia or saudade—a Portuguese word meaning longing for something that is eternally lost and will never come back. Fado combines elements of Portuguese country folk music with Moorish and African influences, among others.

António Zambujo will perform on Monday, January 27, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Harris Center is located on the west side of Folsom Lake College campus in Folsom, CA, facing East Bidwell Street.

Jazz Piano Virtuoso Brings Musical History To Harris Center

Jon Weber, a spectacular solo pianist, whose brilliantly crafted spontaneous orchestrations easily place him in the rarefied company of today's elite jazz musicians, has been praised by All About Jazz as “ a virtuoso - pure and simple.”

Harris Center for the Arts will serve as the venue for Mr. Weber as he presents From Joplin to Jarrett: 100 Years of Piano Jazz in Folsom beginning January 23rd.

Joplin to Jarret serves as a concise history of jazz piano with an emphasis on the earlier composers from the first half of the 20th Century. Over 100 years of music interspersed with musical excerpts with Weber’s insights and anecdotes reveal a lifetime's worth of impassioned research. His extraordinary facility for recall and analysis allow him to form fascinating and unexpected connections between artists of different eras, their development and influences in jazz piano.

Jazz pianist Jon Weber has recorded and toured all over the world, winning numerous honors for performance and composition – scoring extensively for television since 1987. Gary Burton, Roy Hargrove, Niels-Henning, Ørsted Pedersen and Avishai Cohen have all recorded Jon’s music, and his newest critically-acclaimed release, Simple Complex, rose to #1. “Brilliant,” acclaims the New York Times.

Weber fell in love with jazz music at age three, listening to his father's records and mimicking them on a toy organ. When he was five, his grandmother gave him her old pianola, along with 2000 piano rolls. By the time he was six, he had learned all 2,000 tunes. Now Weber has a storehouse of more than 20,000 tunes at his disposal.

Weber shared some of his early memories that helped prepare him for his current success. “When I was a child, my father invented simplified versions of Scott Joplin rags for me to play on the piano. As I grew older, I started struggling with the original versions, replete with complex syncopation, double octave stretches and break-‐neck tempos. Several decades later, I'm still wrestling with those rags. It takes an enormous amount of skill to play them well-‐ to give each note the clarity and weight it deserves, and maintain the beat with precision at any speed.”

By age 19, Jon’s jazz quintet had opened up for Pat Metheny, Buddy Rich, Freddie Hubbard, and Stanley Turrentine. Now a favorite at New York’s 92nd Street “Y” jazz series, performing piano duos with Dick Hyman, Cyrus Chestnut, and Bill Charlap, Jon Weber—a true original—is rapidly emerging as a singular personality in jazz. CNN, BET, CNBC, Bravo Arts, NPR, Voice of America, Carnegie Hall, the 92nd Street Y, Birdland, The Blue Note, Lincoln Center, Sirius Jazz Radio and the BBC have profiled Jon Weber’s unique musical depth and vast knowledge of his craft. UK’s Jazz Journal International writes; “Jon Weber is a virtuoso pianist with outstanding technique plus boundless imagination and enthusiasm who is bound to make a big impression on the international jazz scene.”

Jon Weber - From Joplin to Jarrett: 100 Years of Piano Jazz will be performed on Thursday, January 23, 2014; 7:30 p.m., Friday, January 24, 2014; 7:30 p.m., added performance Saturday, January 25, 2014; 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 26, 2014; 2:00 p.m.. Tickets are priced at $29-$39, Students with ID $12.

Book Club at Van Kleef's Art Exhibition At Harris Center For The Arts

Harris Center for the Arts at Folsom Lake College hosts the invitational "Book Club at Van Kleef’s”exhibition, January 10 through March 9, 2014, with a special artists’ reception set for Friday, January 24 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

A panel discussion with the artists immediately precedes the reception from 4:30-5:30 p.m. in PAC-1062 (instructional room in the Harris Center).

"The Book Club at Van Kleef’s"  is a group of artists from Oakland, CA who began a tradition of meeting to discuss art, life and politics. The loosely knit cadre has met weekly at the Café Van Kleef in the Uptown district of Oakland for nine years. The "BCVK" exhibits many different styles but they share a common bond of friendship. Participating artists in this show are: Mark Ashworth, Gary Burgess, Keith Ferris, Josh Greenberg, Bob Hernandez, Rose Kelly, Fred Kling, Robert Laney, Michael Mew, Bob Bagnasco Murray, King Shrubb, PeterVan Kleef, Norton Wisdom and Agnes Yau.

“BCVK” member Robert Hernandez explains, “The Book Club at Van Kleef's, after nine years of Thursday gatherings, remains an important conduit for information sharing and camaraderie. Some 20 strong continue to support and contribute to Bay Area art exhibits and an exchange of ideas and concepts in the art world.
As the art world explodes exponentially, artists must maintain contact with one another in order to remain knowledgeable and viable. There is no substitute for first-hand information on exhibits, lectures and books that are discussed in the weekly gatherings. The artists support individual exhibits and are constantly producing new artwork. People get inspired by what others accomplish, and the Book Club is a prime example of just that type of camaraderie.”

The Bank of America Gallery is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays when exhibits are installed. In addition, the gallery is open beginning one hour before, and during intermissions of, each scheduled performance at Harris Center.

Regular admission to the gallery is free of charge. Parking permits are required Monday through Thursday, and Friday before 5 p.m. Permits are available for $1 per vehicle from automated kiosk dispensers located near the parking lot entrances.
