El Dorado County Senior Farmers’ Market Check Distribution

The El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging now has a limited supply of Senior Farmers’ Market Check booklets available for El Dorado County Seniors.

Farmers’ Market Check booklets will be distributed to qualified seniors on a first come, first served basis.

Distribution will take place this Friday, August 23, at the Government Center Farmers’ Market in the Placerville Library parking lot located at 345 Fair Lane in Placerville.  Check booklets will be distributed from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., or while supplies last.

Farmers’ Market Checks are available for those at least 60 years of age and meeting income guidelines (one person household with annual income less than $21,257 or a two person household less than $28,694).

Each eligible senior will receive checks redeemable for the purchase of fresh, locally grown, nutritious fruits, vegetables, cut herbs and raw unprocessed honey.

Quantities are limited and checks are distributed on a first come, first served basis so please be prepared to wait in line. Checks are good at all authorized Farmers’ Markets.

Seniors may designate an individual (proxy) to receive their checks and make purchases at the Farmers’ Market on their behalf.  A proxy form needs to be completed by the eligible senior, in advance, so that the Proxy can pick up the checks during the distribution. For more information or to request a Proxy Form, call Senior Information & Assistance at (530) 621-6369 OR (800) 510-2020.

Food Bank Of El Dorado County Partners Up To Help Those In Need

A few weeks ago Keith Turner Director, Public and Government Affairs, Safeway Inc. Northern California Safeway, contacted the Food bank of El Dorado County explaining that Safeway was holding a management meeting at Harvey’s and would be donating 750 bags of groceries that they wanted to give to local residents in need.

At the same time California Emergency Food Link offered to provide fresh produce and other food items to El Dorado County.  The El Dorado County Food Bank staff quickly identified South Lake Tahoe as a distribution point and contacted representatives from the local American Legion Hall.

The veterans offered a distribution location and it was on! A free farmers market was set up to provide food assistance to 250 families on June 26th.  Family Resource Center helped with volunteers and at the end of the day this unique partnership provided groceries and produce to 176 local families that were very appreciative.  One woman called the Food Bank immediately after the distribution and thanked staff explaining how bad the South Lake Tahoe area needs help and asked when the Food Bank would be back as the fresh produce is something they rarely see.

Look for the Food Banks new Mobile Pantry Outreach Unit to be visiting communities throughout El Dorado County.  Follow distributions and other pertinent information by checking them out on Facebook at here, calling 530-621-9950, or email info@foodbankedc.org. Together we can make a difference!
