Canyon Keepers February Events

The Canyon Keepers will hike the Western States/Robie Point Fuel Break Trails on Saturday February 9th. The group will meet at 9:00 a.m. at the Overlook parking area off Pacific Ave. in Auburn. This will be an out and back hike that is approximately six miles long with an elevation climb of about 500 ft at the end. Bring your binoculars if the weather is good and we will try to spot birds along the trail. Probably allow about three hours for the hike. Proper hiking shoes and water are recommended. Heavy rain will cancel. Dogs on leashes are allowed. Trail maps and other information is available at canyonkeepers.org. For more information call Charlene at 530-346-7032.

Also, don't forget to attend the first Canyon Keepers meeting of 2013, scheduled for Tuesday, February 5. It's titled "Regional History Revealed; Winter Outings in Our Foothills," courtesy our speaker Evan Jones. The speaker will help you visit nearby trails that are (usually) below the snow! Newly-accessed finds will be discussed, including the historical Tillotson Trail, miners' graves, a 19th century cable bridge, the Bullion Mine, Nisenan petroglyphs and the Hidden Treasure Mine. Upcoming guided outings to these and other sites will be announced.

The meeting will take place at the Canyon View Community Center, 471 Maidu Drive in Auburn. Snacks are served at 5:45p.m.; meeting begins at 6:15p.m. and the speaker at 6:30p.m.. Evan Jones, speaker and former physics instructor, founded the Historical Trails Council, which is dedicated to preserving and sharing endangered historical trails in the northern Sierra. As a former physics instructor, he edits science texts and writes for the educational physics literature.

Also, February is a great month to join Canyon Keepers! Dues are only $5 a year if you become a member and participate as an active volunteer (It would help if you brought a $5 bill -- requiring no change). It's a good way to find greater enjoyment in the Canyon and to meet new people with similar interests. A few CK activities are open to members only.

Cinema at the State Film Series December Selection - White Christmas

The Auburn Placer Performing Arts Center announces its Cinema at the State Film Series selection for Thursday, December 20th at 7p.m. They will she showcasing the holiday romantic, comedy musical White Christmas.

White Christmas was one of the top box office hits of 1954 and has become a Christmas holiday season tradition. The endearing storyline and familiar faces (Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera Allen, Rosemary Clooney and Dean Jagger) make this film one of the most heartwarming, feel good films of all time. Excellent singing and dancing, featuring Irving Berlin songs "Sisters," "Snow," "Counting Blessings Instead of Sheep," and the Christmas favorite “White Christmas”, make this is a family-oriented film perfect for sharing with your loved ones over the holidays.

After leaving the Army following World War II, former military men Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) team up and become a top song-and-dance act. When they meet a pair of beautiful sisters, Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy (Vera Ellen) Haynes, who also have a song-and-dance act, they become enthralled. And when Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform for a Christmas show, the guys follow, only to find that their former commander, General Waverly, is the owner of the lodge. They also find out that the lodge is in trouble! Romantic mix-ups and tender moments follow as they all try to help the beloved General.

Filmed in Technicolor, and  distributed by Paramount Pictures, White Christmas is notable for being the first film produced and released in “VistaVision”, a wide-screen process developed by Paramount that entailed using twice the surface area of standard 35mm film. This large-area negative was used to yield finer-grained standard-sized 35 mm film prints.

Tickets are $8.00 at the door, with a limited number of seats available for advance purchase online at livefromauburn.com.  You may also call the box office at 530-885-0156. The box office opens 90 minutes before show time for each performance.

Auburn Art Walk This Thursday

The Auburn Art Walk returns to Old Town and Downtown Auburn from 6:00 to 9:00pm on Thursday, June 14. Enjoy an evening of live music and conversations with artists in over two dozen businesses.  Here are a few highlights of this month's Art Walk:

The Arts Building Gallery debuts "30 & Under," a first ever collection of work by our area's most talented young artists. Also on display downstairs at The Arts Building are works by students of Linda Green.

Across the street at Monkey Cat Restaurant you'll find the work of Elora Milby, a talented young artist who is co-curating the "30 & Under" show at The Arts Building.

Southside Art Center artists celebrate the theme "Over the Rainbow" in their group show. Other group shows include Aubrey Straub, Patricia Bradley and students of Traci Owens at Studio Eight 02, and watercolor students of Sonya Hamilton at the Chocolate Shoppe and Gift Emporium.

Tango Frozen Yogurt features the whimsical, dream-like acrylic paintings of Kara Maria Schunk, which incorporate florescent colors and glitter.

Enjoy the hand-painted boxes of Vivian Justus at Gimme Cake Too. Using cigar boxes and a variety of hand-crafted finishes, each of these functional boxes is a true keepsake.

At Sierra Moon Goldsmiths you'll find assemblage, monotype and collage pieces created by Diane Rukhala Bell, who whimsically incorporates collected remnants of old quarry sheds into her collages.

Live music provided by the Auburn Arts Commission includes The Old West Trio at Herschel Young Park in Old Town and Sambandha World Music at the Clock Tower. Also, Music and Poetry will be in the Garden at the Old Library Art Studios, where you'll also find works by the students of artists in residence Thien Dao and Paula Amerine.

For the link to view the online map of venues and featured artists visit PlacerArts.org/programs/artwalk. You may also pick up a free map on Art Walk day at PlacerArts, 808 Lincoln Way, or at any of the venues, which are marked by red "Auburn Art Walk" signs.
