Primates More Comfortable at the Folsom Zoo Thanks to La-Z-Boy Owners

Two small primates named Darwin and Wallace will spend their days a little more comfortably thanks to Jim and Liz Reego, owners of the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries!

The Reegos, whose daughter Grace volunteered at the Zoo this past summer, recently donated $2,500 to the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary to provide a more safe and enriching living space for the adorable macaques.

"Grace came home after her shift at the Zoo and told us about Wallace who suffers from epilepsy and often falls suddenly," said Liz Reego, "We all decided that we wanted to help him have a more comfortable and safe life. Since we don't make recliners quite that small, we asked the Zoo what could be done." The upgrades will include demolishing old man-made rocks, adding sand for them to play in as well as installing more play and climbing structures for both macaques, who have been at the zoo for a long time, to enjoy.

"Years ago, I read about the incredible work of Jane Goodall and I fell in love with primates," said Grace Reego. “So I'm really happy that these little guys will have a better life thanks to our La-Z-Boy stores."

“Without the support and generosity of the public, volunteers, local businesses and private foundations we could never accomplish so much,” explained Jill Lute, Zoo Supervisor at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary. “The animals will truly benefit from the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries donation.”

The Reegos have a long history of generously giving back to the community by proudly supporting a number of local charities, community groups and a variety of causes. For more information about locally owned La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries showrooms, please visit lazboy.com/sacramento.

Tips For Entering Your Child Into Style's Cutest Kids Contest THIS Saturday

Are you entering your child in our Cutest Kids Contest?

Do not miss the Folsom Family Expo THIS Saturday from 10a.m. to 3p.m. at the Folsom Community Center!

EVERY single child entered into the Cutest Kids Contest, photographed by K. Walker Photography, will appear in Style's May 2014 issue.

Check out 10 tips for better portraits with your children from K. Walker Photography:

1. What should your child wear?
For our Cutest Kid Contest, we will be using a neutral white back...ground, so any color is fine. We are focusing on the face of your child so consider choosing a color that compliments their eyes. Don’t forget that clothes need to be comfy for them too. Avoid clothing that doesn’'t lay right or requires lots of adjustments such as hoodies or big collars. Clothing should be clean and wrinkle free.

2. When is a good time to arrive for pictures?
Choose a time to arrive for your photos when your child has been well rested and fed. You want them in their happiest mood. In our studio we always schedule babies and toddlers in the morning hours, we find that is when they are the most relaxed and happy.

3. What to bring?
Bring a brush or comb for last minute adjustments. Bring wipes to make sure their little face is clean and fresh. Bring a treat to reward them for good behavior when they are done. Don’t bring props to include the picture, none are needed.

4. That is not your smile...
Please do no’t coach your child once they are in front of the camera unless you see bad behavior that our photographer can’t control. Children are eager to please and will willingly give genuine smiles to a photographer if they are comfortable and happy with where they are. We are pros at making a child giggle and laugh.

5. Hair
Bring along clips or bows if you wish. Hats are not encouraged as they are difficult to photograph and will distract from your child’s face.

6. Rashes, Bumps and Bruises
Minor retouching will be included on the final image submitted, so if your child has a small scratch, bump or bruise it is simple to remove. We are looking for cuteness! Not perfection!

7. Distractions
Please don’t use toys or noise makers in the background. Please try to not coach them. Our photographer is skilled at getting a child’s best expression. Let the photographer do her job.

8. Babies That Can’t Sit Up and Toddlers
If your child can’t sit up or is not able to sit still, you may be asked to hold your child in your lap for their support. We promise you won'’t be in the picture!

9. Smiles Vs. No Smiles
Sometimes a big smile is not the best expression of your child. If your child is not going to smile, please don'’t worry, even a little serious face can be incredibly cute! We might even try coaxing a mad face or a monster face out of them.

10. No cell phone, video camera or regular cameras permitted.
Please be respectful and do not use your cell phone, video cameras and regular cameras during the time your child is being photographed. It is a distraction to both your child and the photographer. You would also be violating Style Magazine and K. Walker Photography's copyrights.

We look forward to seeing you Saturday! For more information please visit www.facebook.com/folsomfamilyexpo.

Top Of Folsom Set For September 14

Top of Folsom is coming to Folsom September 14th!

Guests will enjoy tastes from nearly 40 top wineries, restaurants and breweries, and peruse the work of  20 fine artists during Top of Folsom from 7 – 10 p.m.

The benefit event features unusual performance art presented on the scenic rooftop of the parking structure overlooking Historic Folsom.

Last year, Karen Holmes of Karen’s Bakery Café entertained the crowd by tossing the ingredients of an enormous salad from one floor of the structure to the next. She has similar surprises up her chef’s sleeve for this year.

In addition, a performing artist will create a sculpture before the crowd, to be displayed later at the Folsom Zoo. Last year, the stars of DIY (Do-It-Yourself) Network’s Yardcore created a metal condor that’s now part of the zoo’s bird exhibit.

Top of Folsom guests will enjoy samples from Fat Rabbit, Fat's Asian Bistro, Hawks Restaurant, Karen's Bakery & Café, Red Rabbit, Scott’s Seafood, Source Tapas, Snook’s Candies, Sutter St. Steakhouse and The Waterboy/OneSpeed.

Wineries include Sierra Foothills favorites Amour Prive Winery, Fiddletown Cellars, Madroña Vineyards, Petra Vineyard, Pruett Vineyard, Renwood Winery, Scott Harvey Wines and Yorba Wines. Schug Winery, Titus Vineyards and Westwood Family Cellars will be among those representing Napa and Sonoma.
American River Brewing Company, Auburn Alehouse, Lockdown Brewery, Loomis Basin Brewing Company and Mraz Brewing Company will serve beer.

Twenty fine artists from throughout northern California will display their work, which will be available for sale that evening.

The event takes place on the upper deck of the Historic District’s 4-story brick parking structure on Leidesdorff and Reading streets, offering guests panoramic views of the city. Presented by the Folsom Historic District, Top of Folsom benefits the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary and the Folsom Historic District. Animals from the zoo will make special appearances.

Tickets are on sale at TopOfFolsom.com and at Karen’s Bakery Café for $75 through August 31; $85 in September and $90 at the door.  Price includes wine, beer and food sampling, entertainment and a commemorative wine glass.  Complimentary valet parking is available on Reading Street. A special lodging package, including two tickets to the event and a pre-party, is available at Lake Natoma Inn.

Folsom Zoo Says Goodbye To A Dear Friend...

The Folsom Zoo and its visitors lost a dear friend this week.

On April 25, Black Bear Fisher was euthanized due to walking difficulties and not being well for a few weeks previous. A veterinary examination showed that his condition could sadly not be treated.

Fisher had been at the zoo since 1995 and had also served as an ambassador. Jeff Boone, president of the Friends of the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary said that the visitors and staff will greatly miss his antics and caring ways.

If you wish to read more about Fisher or share your own memories, visit Fisher's page.

Also, if you are interested in showing support against budget cutbacks affecting the zoo, attend the Folsom City Council budget workshop.

When: Tuesday, May 11
Where: Folsom City Hall, 50 Natoma St.
Time: 4 p.m. (workshop) 6:30 p.m. (meeting)
