Childhood Cancer Head Shaving Events Kick Off Saturday

St.  Baldrick's head shaving events for childhood cancer research kick off this Saturday, March 2!

The Keaton Raphael Memorial presents the 11th Annual St. Baldrick's Foundation head shaving celebrations, designed to raise funds to support childhood cancer research by recruiting "Heroes" to shave their heads in front of thousands live in return for pledges of financial support from friends and family members. This year's celebrations are scheduled to take place in Roseville, Sacramento and Davis.

Why all the shaved heads?
        • Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive.
        • In the U.S., more children die of childhood cancer than any other disease-more than aids, asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital anomalies and diabetes combined.
        • Only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding is dedicated to pediatric cancer research.
        • St. Baldrick's Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease.

As one of the top five St. Baldrick's campaigns  nationwide, The Keaton Raphael Memorial events brought in over $889,000 during the 2012 shave extravaganza's and shaved almost 1,000 heads with a total of over 4 million dollars raised since KRM's first event in 2003.   All proceeds go to childhood cancer research and could not be raised without the support of the community sponsors and volunteers coming together to help shave away childhood cancer!

When:
Saturday, March 2nd, at Westfield Galleria in Roseville, from 12p.m.-4p.m.
Monday, March 11th, at deVere's Irish Pub in Sacramento, from 4p.m.-8p.m.
Wednesday, March 13th, at deVere's Irish Pub in Davis, from 5p.m.-8p.m.

Chris Riva from KCRA and Adrienne Bankert, returning from Dallas, will emcee for the March 2nd event. Thousands of people will cheer on those getting shaved. Star Wars characters will make an appearance on March 2. Families of childhood cancer victims will also share stories. The  de Vere's Irish March 11 and 13 shaves will take place outdoors with lots of action and crowd involvement. Supercuts generously supplies all stylists for all events.

Supercuts Stylist Will Shave Her Head To Help Cure Childhood Cancer

Supercuts Stylist, Olga Howerton, will shave her head to help cure childhood cancer!

On March 2, the Roseville Galleria will be hosting a St. Baldrick’s event. Olga Howerton, the manager of the Folsom Supercuts, will be shaving all 20+ inches of her beautiful hair in honor of children who are facing the battle of their lives.

Olga hopes to raise $30,000 in donations for St Baldrick’s. Throughout the month of February, all of the Sacramento area Supercuts salons will be accepting donations to help Olga reach her goal.

"We have been involved with St. Baldrick’s for a couple of years and hearing people's stories touched me. I thought, why can't I do that? It's only hair. It grows back. If I can bring this money to the event to help someone's life then why not?" says Howerton pictured with Emma Young.

Emma, age four, was diagnosed with leukemia at age two, and hopes to attend the Roseville Galleria event to help shave Olga's head.

Funds raised at the St. Baldrick’s event, hosted by Keaton Rafael Memorial, will go toward childhood cancer research, and also help support local children with cancer and their families. For more information visit getbald.com, or your local Supercuts salon.

If you would like more information about this event, please call Supercuts Event Coordinator Ashley Allison at 916-307-3527, or email Ashley at supercutsevents@sbcglobal.net.

The Keaton Raphael Memorial's 12th Annual Chipping Away at Childhood Cancer Golf Tournament

The Keaton Raphael Memorial has always been near and dear to my heart! Each year, they participate in an event called St. Baldrick's Day, where people shave their heads to raise money for The Keaton Raphael Memorial.

In 2005, I participated and shaved my head! It was one of the coolest things I've ever done (yep, that's me to the left with my freshly shaved head)!
In fact, I'm going to do it again -- in 2010, I'll be shaving my head again for this remarkable organization. I'm in the process of growing my hair out now (it's just below my shoulders) so that before the shave, we can cut off a nice long ponytail that I can then donate to Locks of Love (a wonderful organization that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments, http://www.locksoflove.org/). So let the countdown begin!

In the meantime...Coming up in August is The Keaton Raphael Memorial's 12th Annual Chipping Away at Childhood Cancer Golf Tournament!

When: Monday, August 24; Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the shotgun start is 11:30 a.m.

Where: Sierra View Country Club in Roseville

The Details: The tournament costs $500 for a twosome and $1,000 for a foursome, which includes green fees, a cart, box lunch, a fabulous Hawaiian-themed dinner, putting contest, raffle, goodies on the range, a silent auction and prizes. Golf tournament sponsorships range from $150 to $5,000. Dinner costs $40 if you would like to attend and not participate in the golf tournament.
About The Keaton Raphael Memorial: The goal of this non-profit organization is to support children with cancer and their families by providing emotional, educational and financial support, while also increasing awareness and funding research toward a cure. In addition, they also offers burial expenses to families and provides an extensive network of resources.
