Living History: Women's History Day in Old Sacramento March 29th

In honor of “Women’s History Month,” the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation is proud to present a special Living History event. 

Women’s History Day events will take place throughout Old Sacramento State Historic Park on Saturday, March 29.  Dressed in 19th century period attire, men and women will show how men’s and especially women’s fashion has changed throughout the decades.

Living History re-enactors will showcase their hand-made historic attire from the 1850s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

The origins of “Women’s History Month” as a national celebration date back to 1981 when Congress identified a week in March as “Women’s History Week.”  In 1995, the celebration was expanded to the entire month and the tradition continues.

Sacramento History Museum Offers Free Admission To Military Personnel And Their Families This Summer

The Sacramento History Museum announced its participation in Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more than 1,800 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2013.

“We are proud to once again participate in the worthwhile Blue Star Museums program this summer,” said Historic Old Sacramento Foundation Deputy Director Kristina Swanson. “We are happy provide an opportunity for our nation’s service members and their families to connect with our national treasures.  It is our way of giving back to dedicated military families who sacrifice so much.”

This year, more than 1,800 (and counting) museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and American Samoa are taking part in the initiative, including more than 450 new museums this year.  The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card, or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card, which includes active duty military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard), National Guard and Reserve members and up to five immediate family members.

Supported by the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation, the Sacramento History Museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (except on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day)  and is located at 101 I Street in Old Sacramento.  Admission is $6 for adults; $4 for youths ages 6-17 and free for children five and under.  For more information, call (916) 808-7059 or visit historicoldsac.org.

About Blue Star Museums
Blue Star Museums runs from Memorial Day, May 27, 2013 through to Labor Day, September 2, 2013.  The free admission program is available to any bearer of a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card, or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card, which includes active duty U.S. military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, as well as members of the National Guard and Reserve, U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps - and up to five family members. Some special or limited-time museum exhibits may not be included in this free admission program. For questions on particular exhibits or museums, please contact the museum directly. Women's History Day At The Sacramento History Museum March 9th

In honor of “Women’s History Month,” the Historic Old Sacramento Foundation is proud to present a special Living History event: Women’s History Day that will  take place throughout Old Sacramento State Historic Park on Saturday, March 9. 

Dressed in 19th century period attire, men and women will passionately debate the controversial topic of women’s suffrage.  In addition, visitors to Old Sacramento may chance upon Living History characters as they roam the streets urging women to take up the vote.

Sacramento Museums Special Summertime Evening Events


In addition to its fascinating Gold Rush past, the Sacramento area is rich with an amazing array of state-of-the-art museums and historic sites that offer visitors the chance to explore California's fine art, history, science and wildlife treasures all year long.

In July, many of the 29 members of Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM) are proud to showcase a variety of special evening events geared primarily for adults, including:

Starry Nights at the Crocker Art Museum - July 5
On the first Thursday evening of the month through September, the Crocker will screen classic and contemporary films in the E. Kendell Davis Courtyard and will feature "Casablanca" on July 5. Activities begin at 7:30 p.m., and the courtyard screening is at 8:30 p.m. For those who would like to picnic in the evening breeze, seasonal fare and movie treats can be purchased at the new Crocker Cafe by Supper Club. Mumbo Gumbo at Fairytale Town - July 11
Sacramento favorite Mumbo Gumbo brings their signature danceable sound -- a mixture spanning rock to soul, afropop to lush balladry and zydeco to country -- to Fairytale Town for a special magical evening performance on the outdoor Mother Goose Stage. For more, visit fairytaletown.org.

Underground Adult Evening Tours at the Sacramento History Museum - July 12 & 26
The Sacramento History Museum is proud to offer a series of special "adults only" Old Sacramento Underground tours this summer. Entertaining and knowledgeable guides will lead tour guests on one-and-a-half-hour evening walking tours that explore some of the dark secrets and racy tales lurking in Old Sacramento's underground history. Beer, Babes and Brawls at the Sacramento Old City Cemetery - July 13
It's an adult evening of beer, wine, live entertainment and listening to stories of early Sacramentans with checkered pasts. Guests will stroll through the Old City Cemetery while meeting these colorful individuals. Each participant will receive two beverage tickets upon admission which can be redeemed for a glass of wine, beer or soda in the saloon. For more, visit oldcitycemetery.com.
