Winter Wine Tasting Classes at Lake Forest Cafe!

Sometimes picking the right wine for your soirée can be a headache all on its own. If like us you need a few tips, don't miss the upcoming Wine Tasting Classes at Forest Lake Cafe.

Former Corti Brothers wine merchant and educator Donal Smith will continue his popular class that's built around the idea that the better wine taster is a better wine buyer (we are all for that!)

Select Corti Brothers, Total Wines and Beyond Napa wines will be tasted and evaluated - supported by Donal's fact-filled handouts (given to all students to use in the class and take home). Scheduled winemaker and trade guests will also make their appearance at this three-week wine tasting venture.

What do the wines (being sampled in the class) look like, smell like, taste like, feel like’ in your glass?

These are all questions you'll have answered!

Not to mention you won't be tasting on an empty stomach - appetizers will be served as well. A great Valentine's Day gift for the seasoned vino-lover or newbie!

The class is limited to just 40 students.

WHEN: March - 8, 15, 22 – Three Thursday evenings: 6:30 – 8:15 PM
WHERE: Lake Forest Café – 13409 Folsom Boulevards, Folsom, California
RSVP: Tariff - $89 (all inclusive) - Three nights - 916 203-4641

Wine Walks in Northstar-at-Tahoe!

To me, a day is mighty fine if there’s wine! So when I recently spent a Saturday afternoon at Northstar-at-Tahoe enjoying the breezy summer weather, strolling around the Village and sampling multiple vinos with two friends, well, I sure wasn’t whining. As the third in a series of five Wine Walks held at the Village at Northstar, the three of us tasted both reds and whites from San Luis Obispo’s Edna Valley Winery. Held from May through August, each Wine Walk in the series features a different California winery serving up a variety of its wines for tastings.

Tickets are $25 in advance, or $30 the day of, and it’s definitely worth the cost because you’ll taste seven or eight wines and snack on tasty refreshments. We arrived shortly before the 2:30 p.m. start time to check in, which was smart because the line was quickly growing longer and cutting down on our sippy-sippy time. At check-in, we each received a map of the Village, for navigating which wines and snacks were available at the participating shops, and a commemorative wine glass (Woot! Gotta love free loot!).

As we made our way to each wine tasting stop (which had generous pours!), the location would be checked off on our maps, which helped as we made our way through the Village. Along with the delicious wines, we got to grub on strawberries and chocolate fondue (white, milk and dark), cheese and crackers, and cupcakes. All the sweet treats complemented the wines very well, but weren’t quite enough to fill us up so we stuck around for dinner in the Village since the snacks were a bit limited. At the end of the three-hour event, we filled in our contact information on our maps, which became our tickets to enter a wine-themed prize pack raffle, with the drawing held in August.

If you’re planning a trip to Northstar this summer (why wouldn’t you when it’s just about two hours away?!), try to set it up to coincide with one of the two upcoming Wine Walks this summer. It’s a guaranteed way to have fun in the sun!

Upcoming Wine Walks:
Saturday, July 30 - Sterling Vineyards
Saturday, August 27 - Ferrari-Carano

Wings, Wine and Art!

When do those three things mix? We know art and wine are pretty typical for charity functions, but bald eagles aren't usually thrown in the mix. But that's what will be going on at the High Hand Nursery (Sierra foothills) where the benefit bash for the Gold Country Wildlife Rescue is happening.

The organization is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured wild animals. At the benefit, which will take place in the historic High Hand fruit sheds, you'll have a chance to peruse local work by High Hand Art Gallery artists and learn all about rescued birds of prey. There will also be some birds mingling with guests. Now that's an idea we haven't heard about!

And of course, we didn't forget the wine! There will be light hors d’oeuvres and a complimentary glass of wine with the option to purchase more beverages. You also will have a chance to win a fabulous raffle prize!

For more information and to purchase tickets, visit highhand.com or call (916) 652-2065.

WHEN: February 19
WHERE: High Hand Nursery, 3750 Taylor Road, Loomis
TIME: 6 p.m.
COST: $10

Save the date: A Winery Celebration!

The rumors are true.... the Bumgarner Winery in Camino is now open! This rustic wood carver studio is a delightful tasting room. Their first white wine is a 2009 Chardonnay and available for tasting and by the glass. There is also a Bumgarner Hard Cider... now that's what we are talking about!

Plus, they are implementing a new, greener concept for offering wines on tap in addition to their premium bottled wines. It's a bit more eco-friendly with less packaging and bottling up needed for a purchase to go. We love it when businesses are environmentally with it!

Check out all their new releases and you won't want to miss their Grand Opening Celebrating a week from now on January 22. Sounds like a great day of friends and wine tasting!

WHEN: Saturday, January 22
WHERE: 3550 Carson Road, Suite B

Don't Forget about the Placer Hills Wine Tour...Continuing Today!

Passions soar during the Placer Hills Wine Tour this Valentine’s Day. Nine Sierra Foothills wineries, conveniently located off Interstate 80 between Sacramento and majestic Lake Tahoe, are open this weekend to greet wine enthusiasts with award winning wines, new releases and a tantalizing “sweets and treats” food and wine pairing theme with free or low cost tastings from noon to 5p.m. No appointments necessary on this special weekend!

Tour highlights also include port chocolate sauce and barrel tastings at Fawnridge; not-to-be-missed famous buffalo chili by Drooling Dog BarBQ and three new releases at Lone Buffalo; chocolate and port pairings at Mt. Vernon; sweets at Pescatore; and opportunities for deep discounts at Secret Ravine. For something especially decadent, sweethearts can plan ahead and make reservations for a special lasagna luncheon at Dono dal Cielo on Saturday or Sunday.

“The Placer Hills Wine Tour offers extraordinary wines in a down to earth, friendly tasting environment. Anyone looking to impress their sweetheart or enjoy an extra special long Valentine’s Day weekend will not be disappointed,” said Greg Van Dusen, CEO of Placer Valley Tourism.

Placer County’s rich wine growing history includes a past often overlooked by oenophiles. In the days before Prohibition, the region boasted more vineyards and wineries than Napa and Sonoma combined. Today the nine wineries participating in the wine tour offer an unparalleled experience to aficionados and novices, alike. Visitors will enjoy a warm welcome and a wide array of varietals to sample.

Lodging specials and Valentine’s dining deals also abound during the Placer Hills Wine Tour. For more details and links to the wineries, visit their Web site.
