4th Annual Mito Kids 5K Run/Walk

The 4th Annual Mito Kids 5K Run/Walk
is on April 27th!

Join them for a run/walk for a cure,
and help us raise money to fight against Mitochondrial disease.

Mitochondrial disease occurs when the mitochondria inside of cells fail to carry out their primary functions.  Mitochondria are compartments found in every cell of the human body.  When they fail, cells lose much of their ability to produce energy and sustain growth.  Without properly functioning cells, entire organs can be damaged or shut down completely.

Willo Aveda Salons Cut-A-Thon For League To Save Lake Tahoe

Willo Salon and Spa will attempt a Guinness World Record on Earth Day for charity!!!

WHO: Willo Salon and Spa and Willo Beauty Bar

WHEN: Monday, April 22, from 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

WHY: Willo Salon and Spa will participate in a global 24-hour cut-a-thon on Earth Day, April 22. Aveda stylists in salons worldwide – from Tokyo, to Sydney, Moscow, London, New York and Sacramento – will volunteer their time to offer haircuts and blow drys in return for a donation to Earth Month.

The aim is to set a Guinness World Record for most money raised for a charity by haircuts in a 24-hour period. Local charity, The League to Save Lake Tahoe, will receive 100% of the proceeds from the event, and will be on hand to share their work with event attendees.

Willo has set a fundraising goal of $6,000. This event is part of a global effort by the Aveda network of beauty professionals to raise $5 million for clean water in April 2013.

Ponderosa Future Farmers Of America Auction Saturday

The Ponderosa FFA (Future Farmers of America) Booster Association is having a Benefit Auction and Wine Tasting Event on Saturday, April 13.

Join them for an exciting evening with live and silent auctions, fine wine and hors d' oeuvres. Tom Mailey from New Country 105.1 will be the emcee for the night!

Monies raised will support chapter activities, provide school farm maintenance and upgrades, send students to leadership conferences, and provide scholarships to graduating seniors.

The Ponderosa FFA has been providing outstanding agriculture education since 1964. This year the Chapter has over 250 students enrolled in various agriculture courses. The students have opportunities to learn about animal science, plant and crop science, floral design, mechanics, agriculture business, agriculture biology, as well as participating in many leadership experiences.

Spaghetti Feed This Friday Benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters

This Friday the Hands 4 Hope Youth Board is hosting a Spaghetti Feed Fundraiser to help raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County! 

A portion of the proceeds will also help fund outreach programs for the high school teenagers in Team Inspire.

April Events at Maidu Museum & Historic Site

April is filled with events at Maidu Museum & Historic Site!

Campfire: Friday, April 19 from 7:30p.m.-8:30p.m.
Sit under the stars at our outdoor amphitheater to enjoy native stories around the campfire. They’ll provide roasting sticks and marshmallows for a sweet program’s end. Museum doors open at 7p.m. Free admission if you show your Roseville Public Library card. $5 per person, $16 family of four, under 2 are FREE.

Night Out at the Museum: Saturday, April 20 from 6:30p.m. to 8:30p.m.
Join Maidu for a FREE Night Out at the Museum, part of the 3rd Saturday Art Walk. Artists Michael Rowden d'Portola and Patricia Mills will be speaking about their collaborative painting "I Am Your Chief" which depicts the Northern California Modoc War of 1873. This exhibit will be on display through June. Museum doors open at 6:30p.m. Program starts at 7p.m. Light refreshments will be available. Also on display will be the Annual Native Youth Art Show. Students from the United Auburn Indian Community and the Sierra Native Alliance will showcase recent artwork.

Yomen: A Spring Celebration - Sunday, April 28 from 10a.m.-3p.m.
Celebrate and experience California Indian culture at our biggest event of the year! Spend the whole day with your family and enjoy the opening blessing, tribal dance groups, traditional art and craft demonstrations, native storytelling, Indian hand games, guided tours of the historic site and fun children’s activities. Shop at the vendor booths and don’t forget the Indian tacos and other foods available for sale. FREE ADMISSION!

Our Stories: Judith Lowry’s Artistic Reflections on Native California
Exhibit Show Dates: February 16- May 31, 2013
The exhibit Our Stories is a collection of vibrant, large scale narratives that Judith Lowry painted over the past 20 years. She uses symbols inspired by her California Indian roots, mixing her family histories with important oral histories.

Lowry, who lives locally in Nevada City, received her M.A. in art from Chico State and her artwork has been on exhibit in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. Included in this collection are beautiful examples of basketry on loan from the California State Indian Museum.

State Capitol Exhibit
Exhibit Show Dates: February 2-May 31, 2013
View remarkable paintings, sculptures, jewelry and basketry from 18 different Native artists on display in Room 123 on the first floor of the State Capitol building February 2 through May 31. Works from well-known artists such as Frank Day, Harry Fonseca, Frank LaPena and Judith Lowry who have previously exhibited at the Maidu Museum & Historic Site can be seen. Each piece represents and reflects important elements of tribal tradition, embedded within a vitality of vibrant colors, textures and creativity.
