The Crush Bonspiel Makes Its Debut in Rosevelle

The annual Crush Bonspiel is scheduled to make its first debut in Roseville at Skatetown Ice Arena! What makes this event unique is that Skatetown has never hosted curling before, making The Bonspiel a first-time curling event for the Placer Valley region.  Free to the public, the competition begins August 31 at 8:00am and culminates in the Championship game on Sunday afternoon.

Approximately 144 curlers will attend the 2012 Bonspiel, mostly traveling from outside Northern California including eastern Canada, British Columbia, Scotland, the East Coast and Southern California.

Established in 2007, The Crush Bonspiel has become so popular that all 36 team slots were compeltely full 72 hours after the Wine Country Curling Club [WCCC] sent out the 2012 tournament announcements.

Curling Olympians Debbie McCormick, Edith Coudon [Perth, Scotland] and Pat McDonald [Paralympic Curler] will be competing as well.  Both McCormick and Coudon have curled in The Bonspiel when it was originally held in Vacaville, CA.

Originating in Scotland in the 16th century, curling has since become an international sport.  The opening ceremonies for The Crush Bonspiel will tap into curling's rich history by incorporating bagpipers. A high school brigade from Vacaville will pipe the players out onto the ice.  After playing one or two tunes the head bagpiper and the head head of the Bonspiel committee will toast on the ice and wish everyone luck.

There is excitement about the club's growth and expansion possibilities, including the frequency of the Bonspiel, as well as the likelihood for it to grow or lead to larger, additional events.  The long-term vision of WCCC in hosting the Bonspiel is to host national curling events.  Although WCCC has not previously pursued this, they are currently working with Placer Valley Tourism in submitting bids for these types of events.

Romeo and Juliet Auditions Set for September 4th at Folsom Lake College

Auditions for the Falcon’s Eye Theatre production of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4, in the Drama Lab (PAC-1170) of the Three Stages Performing Arts Center on the campus of Folsom Lake College, 10 College Parkway, Folsom. One-dollar parking permits are available at kiosks found throughout the parking lots.

Those auditioning must prepare a monologue that is no more than 90-seconds-long from any play written by William Shakespeare. Monologues from published or unpublished teleplays, screenplays, novels, essays, song lyrics, etc., are not acceptable. The prepared monologue should best portray the actor's strengths and can be of any genre, but must be from a play written for the stage by William Shakespeare. Monologues must be memorized.

  • Auditions will be held on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Auditioners are requested to bring an 8-by-10-inch head shot, and a resume of acting experience, if available.
  • Callbacks are set for 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5 and 6.

Auditioners who are called back will also be asked to perform cold readings from the text. Therefore, it is recommended that all those who try out be familiar with the play Romeo and Juliet before auditioning. Auditions and callbacks are expected to run until approximately 10 p.m. Sept. 4th through 6th.

Evening and weekend afternoon rehearsals are tentatively scheduled to begin Sept. 17, and continue through Nov. 1, 2012. Please note - while minor conflicts with these dates is permissible, significant conflicts cannot be afforded.

The Falcon’s Eye Theatre production of Romeo and Juliet will expose the contemporary relevance of Shakespeare’s masterpiece by taking a modern and audacious approach to the tragic tale of young, star-crossed lovers separated by their feuding families, and the blind anger and ignorance of the adult world surrounding them.

Romeo and Juliet, directed by Folsom Lake College faculty member David Harris, will be presented Nov. 2 through 18, with performances at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays. Additional performances will be given at 2 p.m. Nov. 3, 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8, and 10 a.m. Nov. 9 and 16.

Performances will be held at Stage 2: City Studio Theater in the Three Stages Performing Arts Center, Folsom Lake College.

For additional information, please call the Falcon’s Eye Theatre hotline at (916) 608-6800, or go online at falconseyetheatre.com.
