Hoshall's Cut-a-Thon -- This Sunday!

Periwinkle Gifts in Folsom Opens Tomorrow

One of our favorite gift stores, Periwinkle, is opening at a new location tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Their new location is at 404 Blue Ravine Road, Suite D100 -- it's in the Target Shopping Center at Blue Ravine and E. Bidwell Street.

I stopped in yesterday for a pre-opening preview and many of our favorites are back (Lolita glasses, Lollia body products and Melissa & Doug toys), along with many new items, soon to be favorites as well!

In fact, the Lolita Masquerade Halloween glass that we feature in the October issue of SWAG is available at the new Periwinkle!

So head on over tomorrow and say hi to Susan and Michael!

Folsom Antique Fair

Let me just say, I love all things old. Antique stores, fleamarkets and junk shops are my splurge destination spots.

And this weekend I got my antique-fill when I took home treasures from the 43rd Folsom Antique Fair hosted in Downtown Folsom.

Booths all along Sutter St. offered treasures ranging from tools to textiles, jewelry to jazz records. Shoppers lingered at booths to finger items or just chat with sellers about collections and a mutual love of antiques.

There was so much to see, so I tried not to linger long at the vintage jewelry tables, examining brooches and cameos far out of my budget. But just before I left, a pair of $4 crystal grapevine earrings called my name and I couldn’t resist.

And that’s why I keep coming back every year. There is a wide range of prices for everyone, from serious collectors willing to spend a lot to young kids with only $2.

After another hour or two of shopping I picked up two vintage photographs, black military buttons and two prints of young aristocrats.

And while I had already purchased one pair of earrings, I had to get a pair of earrings made from the faces of wristwatches. So unique!

And that’s why I will always mark the fair on my calendar each year; you can find fabulous pieces not available at the department stores. Folsom proves you don’t have to travel out of town to find great clothing or pieces for your home.

Time To Clean Out!

Can you barely shut your medicine cabinet because there are so many bottles stuffed in there? Don’t flush down the drain! Mark your calendar because on September 26, the Roseville Police Department and Environmental Utilities will be collecting unused and expired pharmaceuticals in Roseville and Auburn. Sorry, but they won’t be accepting your syringes or lancets.

Or maybe you can barely park your car in the garage...because you still keep all your old TVs, radios and VCRs ‘in case’ you have that yard sale. Instead of letting them collect dust, why not donate them to a worthy cause? You can drop them off at an electronic waste collection on October 3, and all the collections will support the Utility Exploration Center. Sims Recycling Solutions, Whole Foods Market and the City of Roseville will host the collection.

They would love these:
TVs, monitors, computers, cell phones,
laptops, printers, speakers, keyboards, mice, PDAs,
radios, stereos, MP3s, DVD/CD players and VCRs.

Stuff they won’t take:
Household appliances, microwaves, batteries,
toner/ink cartridges or cans/bottles.

Golf, Support A Child

If you are planning to head out to the course for a game of golf this weekend, it just so happens you can support a child at the same time.

The Lilliput Children’s Services is hosting its regional Spikes and Tees Golf-A-Thon this Friday at courses in the area.

And the best part? All the proceeds go back to the program’s services to help find homes for children.

But if you are not too comfortable about your swing, that’s okay. You can also sponsor another golfer to do the work for you. There is a $500 participation fee, so you can ask friends, family or co-workers to help donate to such a worthy fundraiser, which will help find permanent homes for foster care children.

So sign up and tee-off for a good cause! 

The Lilliput Children Services has specialized in domestic adoptions since 1980 and provides Northern California foster, adoption and kinship services.

Mark Your Calendars for the Friends of the Roseville Public Library Book Sale

Martha Riley just sent us the press release on the sale -- check it out:

The Friends of the Roseville Public Library’s semi-annual used book sale is a bargain for customers. The 12,000+ items are priced to sell with children’s books just 25¢; paperbacks 50¢; hardbound $1; and sets of books $5. The sale is Saturday October 10 from 10 am to 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday October 11th from noon to 4:00 p.m. On Sunday all books will be half-priced.

On Saturday morning, children only can shop at the Kid’s Korner section the first hour of the sale. The entire collection consists of sorted fiction, including mystery and science fiction as well as categories featuring history, science, how to, health and wellness, biography, gardening and religion. Media donations include videos and books on tape which sell for $1.

The sale will be held at the Martha Riley Community Library 1501 Pleasant Grove Blvd. in Mahany Park at the corner of Pleasant Grove Blvd and Wood Creek Oaks Blvd. The event is free to the community and public parking is available.

Money earned from the sale is used for adult and children’s library programs and to purchase needed materials for all the Roseville public libraries.
